I recently purchased an old Ford tractor, but have become confused on what it actually is. The owner claimed to be the 2nd owner and said it is a 4000 and it reads that on the hood(blue and white) But, the only numbers I could find hand stamped by the starter were 871 and 65892 and there is red paint under the blue, horizontal cross bars on grill and round "cyclops" emblem on front. From my research all indications are an 871 powermaster. Other number on body is 310609. Also it is a select o speed (10 speeds, 2 reverse) It will not shift into either reverse, neutral, or park unless I remove the "cap" and handle on right side of selector and turn it on around with handle off. Then it will shift through all gears fine. Any ideas? It looks as if that right side "plate" the lever rides in is pretty worn.
(quoted from post at 19:32:30 08/23/12) The best places to look for original gold paint are under the lid of the toolbox and under the hood around and behind the air cleaner.

When Ford introduced the SOS trans in Jan 1959 they required every dealer to buy one to demonstrate to his customers. They were painted gold to make them stick out like a sore thumb and thus the "Gold Demonstrator" nickname was coined. Most people couldn"t care less but they do have some additional values to collectors.
After a couple of weeks of working on my tractor I have found gold paint everywhere! You were right on the money. Would say it was def a Demonstrator.

This is neither here nor there for this discussion, but IH also did this in the early 70s when the 826 was introduced. The hood and fenders were gold. The rest of the machine was IH red. That was one good looking tractor.

eBay has parts for these quite frequently. I've seen manifolds on there in the past. Here's a link to the shop manual you need. Ford Tractor Shop Manual 1955-1960 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290463247767

If your transmission casting number is still 312259 (raised letters left side above and behind inching pedal) the above manual will suffice. If it has been replaced with a C3NN-7006-B you'll also need the transmission supplement, FORD Tractor Transmission Shop Manual 1962-1963-1964 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230510621897

God bless!

To awhtx, that verifies everything I've researched so far. Haven't noticed any Gold paint. I'm going to wash it down real good before working on it, so I'll have to look. If I remember correctly from what I've read, the Gold models were "specials"? Would that add any value? Too be honest I just bought this tractor to mow around my property and disc up food plots. Not real familiar with the history of them except my Dad had a 9N when I was a kid and ran forever. For $2500, I think I did alright?

Larry, thanks for the quick response and advice. I'm new to this, so forgive me in advance if I do post something in the wrong place. I'm def going to buy a manual. I wanted to verify what I had first. I bought this tractor for $2500 with implements(think I made a good buy). Had to charge the 6v bat and jump it to get started.(sat for a year) But ran great once it fired up. The 6v will not hold a charge though. Thinking of switching to a 12v system. Will also need and exhaust manifold at some point. Any advice on good place for parts?

I bet if you look underneath the red paint you'll find gold. My 971 Gold Demonstrator is SN 65383. Your 871 was built in Feb 1959, long before the Blue & Gray 4000 series was introduced. Your engine block casting number of 310609 indicates a 172 cu in engine and is correct for your tractor's time period.

Welcome JB. It does sound as though you have an 871 that's been repainted to later colors and had improper decals applied.

As to your SOS problem; unless that shift cap is really shot, I would start by checking shift cable adjustment. You really need a Ford shop manual for this tractor, especially if you're going to tackle the SOS. This is not an operation you wish to do haphazardly.
