I was out leveling my bush hog today and noticed that I am getting a lot of blow bye on my 1977 3600 gaser. Is this something that I should be concerned about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try the 15W40 rotella or delvac in it.

heck.. any 15w40, even traveler or walmart will likely do a better job than a 10w30.. i know she's a gasser.. but I like to run 15w40 in just about all mine save a couple that are getting synthetic..

How many hours are on the tractor?
How much oil is it using? Did you use a different oil this time when you changed it?
Blow by indicates a worn top end but it's not That big of a deal. Oil is cheap.
If it annoys you a lot you could do an inframe on it with new rings, rod bearings and a valve job.
Probably cost you around $400 or so if you do the work yourself and just bring the head in.
Oreilly's Auto will 'rent' you a ring ridge remover for free. Some guys here will pooh pooh an inframe and suggest you go the full monte on a rebuild.
Generally though they are talking about diesels where the engine will go 10K hours before it needs opened up and then yes do the whole deal.
On a gasser though the top end is only good for 5-6K hours(if that) while the bottom end is good for twice that.
$400 would buy you 2-3000 hours which for most of us here is many years worth of mowing and puttering around.

i agree.. a cyl honing, ridge reaming.. perhaps new rings and bearing shells and evena hand valve lapp can get you quite a ways down the road..

what oil ya using?

hows she start, cold and hot?

if she starts good cold and hot with no aid needed.. a lil blowby will be expected and not to worry about.

as wear increases.. blowby will increase and compression will decrease and she may drop some power and be harder to start unaided.

I used Quaker State 10W30 when I changed it. It has 1500 hours on it. It starts very easy hot or cold I put a new Zenith Carb on it. Seems to have plenty of power I have only used it about 8 hours. I replaced the insterment cluster because the RPM needle was broken but the hour meter was working fine.

ditto what UD and RickB said.

swap to a 15w40 oil and then work her and re-evaluate.

sounds like she is NOT ready to be cracked open if she starts fine hot and cold.

she may well limber up a bit when worked like she should.

as rick said. might be oem hours.. might not.. if she sat alot.. she could for sure act this way.

post back after a couple weeks of running the snot out of her and new 15w40 oil.

You have all convinced me to change to 15W40 oil. It will be a while before I can do anything to her. My wife just had surgery on her foot and will be laid up up 6 - 8 weeks so I guess I get to be the house keeper and cook for the next month and a half. Thanks again for all the info.

that oil change will be a great way to spend 10-15m in 2-3 shots out of the house for a break.

1 to get a pan and pull a plug... then let her drain.

the next to repalce plug and spinn off/on filter.

then the next to pour oil in.

:)

good luck

You don't need a rebuild.
Go work the snot out of it for half a day or a day.
Really work it.
Then post back.
With 1500 hours it's probably been laying around in a shed it's whole life and never worked.
I'll bet it will clear up a lot.
I would run a little heavier oil in it. I usually buy a generic diesel rated 15W40 from Fleet Farm and run that in my tractors.

Thanks for all the info. I think the she hasn't been well mantained and has set out in the weather paint is really faded I belive the hours to be correct because the old cluster that I took out was made in England. She seems to be a good tractor got her for 3250 with a 6ft Ford 951 Special bush hog. I thought it was a pretty good buy.

Could be an original proofmeter that had a broken cable for 20 years. or the hours could be correct.
I'd change to a quality 15W-40 and run the snot out of it before tearing it down.
