My 8n only runs smooth with the choke on, if I disengage the choke it starts spitiing and sputtering. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? |

Needing choke means it needs more gas. You can get more gas by lowering the float in the carb float bowl so that it will rise to a higher level before closing, or by clearing a partial plug. As Phil and Old said remove the plug on the bottom and watch for FLOW for about 1/2 minute. ten seconds flow followed by a drip will not keep your motor running. If it is slow back track to find the obstruction. If flow is good and float level correct, the carb needs complete dis assembly, soak, and cleaning of all passages.

Thanks for the info. I'll double check the carb and the spark. Thanks again.

It sounds like your carb needs cleaning and or rebuilding. If it"s been sitting a while, the ethanol gas will eat it up and the rust will clog up the jets. Also check if you are getting good fuel flow from the tank. Good Luck

Front or side mount distributor??? 6 or 12 volts??? Lack of info makes it hard for us to help you help your self. Having to choke it can be one of 2 things. #1 poor/weak spark and a rich mixture burns better then a lean one so check you spark. It needs to be a blue/white in color and jump a 1/4 gap. Next pull the carb drain plug and let the fuel flow for a few minutes. Catch it to make sure it is not full of dirt/rust/water. If you have a good flow try opening up the main jet a little bit at a time. You should be able to open it up to a point that you get black smoke if not then the carb maybe clogged up

Try some carburetor adjustment. If that won't do it, you'll need to overhaul the carburetor.
