Can anyone tell me where to get a breakdown and information on the 4x4 transmission for a 1968 3400 :?: It's the one with four foward and four reverse speeds. I bought the $300 worth of Jensales books and they don't even cover half the stuff for a 3400. I have a growling in the hi/lo selector, more so in Low, and need to see if I can do something about it or if I have to live with it cause I can't afford a dealer repair.
Thanks

| Thanks Sean and everyone. Mine is definately a 4x4 with a G as the last part of the idenity number indicates.
I'l check out the diagrams and print them out if I can. If I can't get this one fixed can I swap in a 6x4 if I can find a replacement from salvage or some place?
Thanks to all you guys on the forum. Without you I would have given up a long time ago!!!! |

| The first Ford man rev tranny was 4X4. It was later changed to 6X4 and 4X4 was discontinued. |

| A 4x4 is a shuttle trans. Foward/reverse is on left side under steering wheel. No clutch pedal. Has no hi/lo. A 6x4 manuel reverseing has hi/lo stick. Ultra posted pic while back of 6x4 shift pattern. |

| There were 2 differetnt 4/4 reversing transmissions used in the 2000, 3000 & 4000 series, the auto reverser and the manual reverser, but according to the New Holland parts web page, it looks like only one of them was available on the 3400. It was the manual reversing model, and it was basically the same as the manual reversing transmission that had 6 forward and 4 reverse gears except the 2 extra forward gears were removed. If you look at the model number stamped into the flat spot on the bell housing just toward the rear of the tractor from the starter, the model number should end in a G if it's the 4/4 manual reversing transmission. There is probably less information available on the 4/4 manual reversing transmission than any other transmission that was used in the 2000/3000/4000 series of tractors.
Exploded parts diagrams for it can be found on the New Holland North America parts search web site. Click Here and then point your mouse up near the top where it says "Parts and Service" and a little menu will pop up and then click on "Search for Parts" and when you get to the parts search web page, type in 3400 as your model and then click the search button, then select "3400 Utility Tractor (1/65-9/75)" and then select Transmission. There will be drawings under there for the transmission housing, controls and internal gears for every type of transmission that was available on the 3400. The manual reversing transmission is near the bottom of the list. The drawings just say manual Reversing transmission, and they don't differentiate between the 6/4 and 4/4 models, but most things should be the same on both, just that the 6/4 has 2 extra forward gears (one in Hi and the other in Low). |
