Wow, are these C.A.V. pumps expensive to buy!
I have been looking for a used pump, but so far have only found two, one for $475 and it did not work! The other one is $600, and I find that a bit too high. Which reminds me, I have not tried Fawcett's yet.
What are the pump prices else where?
I guess I may have to get a core rebuilt!

Why didn't the used one work? No delivery? If so, pop the top off carefully and free the metering valve that the spring is attached to. Clean some of the muck out and try it. Metering valves stick on pumps that sit... and cause 'no delivery' problems.

Hi Rod
My pump guy stated that not only was the pump gummed up, cam ring badly worn, but it also had water in it too, as it had quite a bit of rust in it. The pump is all in pieces now, and I am trying to get it returned.
I have my tractor sitting in my friends shop, holding him up too!
I am not very pleased with the whole thing.

If I clean up the pump and re-assemble it what are the chances it will work as good as it did before the rust? There aren't any pit marks in the cam ring, just wear.

I'm no expert on those things.... but as I understand them most problems are related to rust/stuck metering valves, bad govenor rings or serious damage to the head caused by water. If the head is not badly damaged then I'd wager a cleaning and mabey resealing will get it working decent. What I can tell you is that you generally get two estimates for those pumps. One is in the 5-700 range for the basic cleaning and inspection. The other is the major rebuild of the head that will come in at 1200 plus. That's major. The truth is that they don't do a whole lot for the 5-700 repair...

The pump that did not work was off of a 4000 series Ford motor.
The tractor it is used on is a 3000 Ford.
I am not going to have time to look at the pump before I leave.
So I guess I'll have to tow the tractor home, and work on it when I get back.
Thanks all
Brian

I have a 3238F890 pump on the shelf that has been rebuilt. If interested you can e-mail to mtractor at aol. com. This pump is listed for use on the later model 4630 series and there may be some minor differences, but I believe it could be made to work. They used the 201 engine in those models.
