I am lookjing for a tractor to mow about 7 acres of propery I own. I saw the tractor listed below on Craigs List, but am concerned about working on a diesel. The mechanical's I could probably deal with, but I am worried about the fuel system (Injectors & pump) and the availablity of parts.

Any advice? The listing is below (hope it works), and says the engine starts but has blue smoke.

Thanks for any sugestions.

good price for sure.. but as mentioned. reading between the lines and seeing the cans.. i'd bet on it being an ether addict.. and likely haivng bad rings.

The fact that the pump is painted blue is a strong indication that it is either a replacement or a rebuild. which would reduce the likelihood of need of work on it. I agree about the ether and that it looks like a very good price.

That would be a real good model to own for your purposes. Plenty of power, easy on fuel, very reliable and good parts availability.
Those rear tires look good too which is a plus.
It does worry me to see the two cans of starting fluid on right running board though. That's never a good sign. Not that a little oil burning is a big deal. My concern would be possible damage caused by the ether.
I guess I would look closely at the oil pressure - what's it reading both cold and hot and at idle and at 3/4 throttle.
If the oil pressure is good I would risk the top end. That price is right for sure. Around here it would be listed for more like 3 times that much. Dunno. Do you know anyone who knows these tractors, or diesels in general that could look at it with you? It would be a good model to own...

On the cans of starting fluid: I live in N. Tx. and one balmy spring day I was looking at a 3000D. The guy selling it had to shoot it to get it started. Didn't think much of it, thought like a gasoline engine that may have been sitting for awhile just an aspect of sitting on the lot.

Well, after 6 months of having starting problems and an engine over haul that required all new pistons due to the excessive wear in the ring groves, and a lot of bucks, I realized that if you need ether in anything but the coldest weather, you have a worn out engine and low compression.

Word to the wise!
