I recently acquired a ford 600 "ran when parked". It has no spark. The owner couldn"t find the key so I had to change out the ingnition switch. Supposedly it ran when it was parked but had a flat tire. Owner had a stroke and regretfully just let it sit.
I changed out the ignition switch and can"t seem to get spark to the coil. Does this have a clutch safety switch? Anyother things to test/check??

No the wire seems fine. I bought a set of points to replace it with but have had other things come up. Hopefully will change them out some evening later this week. Everything else seems to be good. I think the old points are glazed and the sandpaper I tried to clean them with was too fine.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Ronnie, I think that it's more that he doesn't understand how things work so he's assuming that removing the cap and rotor somehow disconnects the points, not that this is how his tractor really works.

No. It is definately a 600 according to the emblem on the front of the hood. The distributor is on the lower right side of the engine. The distributor cap comes off the same as on any other dist. I've ever worked with. Then the rotor, then the dust cover, then points and condenser beneath the dust cover.
It's a very common setup similar to about anything built over a 30 year time period.

Ronnie,
No.
Front mount dist was on the earlier Ns
After 1951 or so all fords had the dist on the Right side.

you didnt pick up on the thing I inquired about :
"he asked how was he to check the points for voltage with the cap removed ? " go reread his post I cut teeth on ford tractors if the points disconect with the cap and coil removed he dont have a 600

I was sure there wasn't. I was just sorta' hoping that with Ford's being set up a bit more automotive than the IH and Deere's that I'm used to maybe there was some type of switch/button that I wasn't aware of and it would be an easy fix.

When the points are closed, both sides should measure zero volts relative to ground. When they are open, one side will still be zero volts, and the other side should be 6 volts (or 12 volts if the tractor's been converted to 12 volts) with the key on.

Again if one has sat for any time at all there stands a 95% chance that the points are closed or where closed when it was parked and that in turn causes the points to corrode and that in turn means no spark. Points that do not conduct electricity do not work and that in turn means no spark and nothing you do will fix that till you clean or replace the points. Pull the distributor cap and rotor and dust cover then turn on the ignition and open the point by hand and I bet you will not see or hear a spark at the points.

If you have a VOM or simple test light I would check to see if you have voltage to the coil when the key is on.
Second I would clean and regap the points.
There is a neutral safety switch but it is on the top of the tranny and has nothing to do with the clutch. Has nothing to do with spark either.
I am assuming it is turning over?
Don't go throwing a bunch of new parts at it.
Do a few simple tests first.

I had misplaced my multi-meter so earlier wasn't able to do any tests. Found it. Have voltage at the coil.

Old... I cleaned the points, rotor, and cap last evening. I think you are on the right track regarding the points not being quite right.

Is there a way to test them using the multi-meter?? My understanding they should have voltage when closed. Can you use the tester to determine this?? Not sure how to get voltage to the points with the cap off so that I can get the tester in there to try anything??

I agree that I don't want to start throwing parts at it.

File the points. I recently acquired a 640 that had been sitting for 10 years. There was no continuity across the points so I drug some brown paper through them. Still no continuity so I filed them with a points file that I still have. Continuity! And she fired right up. Then I went and bought a new set of points because once you file them they corrode again very quickly.
