Does anyone know where I could get a pair of stabilizer bars for my 961 similar to the one shown on this 2000 row crop tractor? Note that they are mounted on the inboard side of each lift arm and go to pins on a bracket welded to the bottom of the axle center housing. This one is made of 1/4 inch plate and is roughly 15 inches long. The flat ends are bent at about 45 deg angle. I'm not sure if the owner made these or if they are available somewhere.

I have a set I made out of 1/4" x 1 1/2" for my 960 that I would gladly trade for your fender bolt mounted brackets! They work but as has been said are a bear to use.

I have those short ones that are on the blue tractor made at a shop where they make springs for trucks, make sure your pattern is correct cause you can't bend them to fit (spring steel)

make em.

I made a set for some of my rowcrops using patterns from another rowcrop i had.

as dean said.. making a conversion may be easier.

i made up a conversion for my 4000rc i mow with. made hitching a mower and back blade easier...

Thanks, Soundguy for the detailed post. What you did, I think, is similar to the brackets that are already on my tractor (see photo -sorry for the poor quality cell phone photo). Thing is, as this tractor is mainly for show, some day I hope, I would like to do the inboard bars just for looks. The only thing they will really do is keep the lift arms from flopping around when moving the tractor. So, I may be able to make them myself out of 1/8 in plate which I think I can bend. Thanks so much!

for show, 1/8 will work.. but in use.. you want 3/8
a set of stab bars from tsc, a torch and vice will make them...

but yeah.. the drop bracket is about the same deal as I buzzed up...

Call your CNH dealer. You need part number 230917. Listed as a "sway bar". If you ask the counter guy for a stabilizer bar, he won't have a clue how to find it, but the part was still available a few years ago.

Thanks, Mark. I'll give that a try, although every time I ask him (the CNH parts guy) for a price I cringe. Last week I paid $102. for a new fuel line for my 4 cyl gas 4000. Yikes.

I don't recall what I paid for mine, but CNH sure isn't bashful when it comes to pricing their parts.

Consider just buying one bar. I seldom hook up both of mine because it's too much aggravation. They're so short it's tough to get the second bar in place. Even carrying my flail mower on rough ground, the single bar is sufficient. I doubt if you can get away with using a single bar if you have a set fabricated, though. The OEM bars are made of pretty tough stuff.

A local machine shop took measurements off the set I had, before I sold them. Don't know if he's ever gotten around to making any or not. Could give him a call if you can't find any anywhere else. (715)532-0840. He could UPS them to you.

I hope the bracket is not welded to the bottom of the center housing!
The bars attach to a special version of the swinging drawbar anchor and it supposed to be bolted to the bottom of the center housing with 4 bolts- 5/8" coarse thread as I recall.

Yes, you're probably right, they're bolted to the housing. I was too lazy to crawl under there and look.

Yes, I can see how that would be the case. One idea might be to see if I could find a pair of those short adjustable units as used on modern compact tractors. That might make it easier to do, but wouldn't look original. This tractor is more for show than work, I mainly don't like the lift arms swinging back and forth with only the sway chains.

Thanks, I kinda thought they were OEM parts that are
not made today. My tractor does have two large
brackets mounted on the underside of the axle on the
fender mounting bolts. I thought these were for
stabilizer bars but was not sure. I like the idea
of the inboard bars though. I may be able to make a
sample out of thin metal and then take it to someone
to have thicker ones made.
Thanks again for the info.

The OEM inboard bars are neat and tidy but considerably more difficult to install and remove than the long outboard bars as used on the utility model tractors and row crop tractors that have been fitted with conversion brackets, which are much different than the brackets used on utility tractors.

Everything must be just about perfect in order to fit the bars after hitch up.

I have two tractors that have those. Given one for a pattern, it should be very easy to have a fab shop make them for you or even make them your self if you are equipped.

Will,

As Dean said ,they are OEM items. 46 years ago a neighbor of ours bought a 960 at auction. It had those short bars on it and he changed them over to long ones that went from brackets mounted under the fenders to the outside of the lift arms and connected where the 3 pt drawbar attached.

The stabilizer bars on the pictured tractor are OEM units.

Stabilizer bars for 7/9xx tractors are hard to find.

I sold my spare set a couple of years ago.
