I've had a leak on the pto shaft for awhile, and upon taking a look at it, I noticed there is about 1/2" end play, side to side is tight, after reading some old posts here, and the ford shop manual, the oil seal as shown looks typical for a driveline, and I assume you can pull the assembly, rebuild as needed, would like to fix the leak and the end play, never had one of these out before, any special tools needed, and or tricks to dealing with the repair ?As is it still performs fine, just leaks engages easily, stays engaged, no problems yet, so maybe I caught it in time, shop manual says nothing about end play in these. |

| | Upon further investigation, I see the shaft and housing complete, so you can replace it in whole, if I see this correctly ? (just had to see a photo of the part) Time for a fluid change too, so drain em down, and I had been using 90 wt in the differential, and recall a GL type not to use, bronze bearing incompatible, anyone recall ? I am not sure if the seal in the back is allowing the fluids to mix, not sure how you would tell and or what happens if 90wt mixes in from the rear ? I would also assume, because there are no other problems with the pto operatiopn, this would be easiest, can shelve the old one for later rebuild |

| | trans and diffy CAN use a 80w90 gl5 oil.. no yellow metal to worry about really. the hyds need utf. if your diffy to hyds seal that the pto passes thru leaks.. use utf in all sumps. the pto is easy to remove. 4 bolts and the shaft and bearing carrier slide out after you drain the 2 rear sumps. very likely a seal wear ring has moved on the shaft, or a split ring has popped out of a groove or snapped. easy to rebuild.. I wrote an article on it in the N news a while back. figure 30m to rebuild with parts on hand. ( new pto gasket, new seal, new beraing and new wear ring.. 40$ or so of parts if you do the bearing and wear ring..) or you can repalce it for about 120$ |

| | Right, GL-5, I was pondering this before, reading old posts etc., I'm not sure if that seal is leaking or not, any way to tell ? Does one gain and you can check when pulling the plug or dipstick? I was looking for your article over on that site, not sure where to find it or was it just in their printed magazine, sounds like a minor task to rebuild, or replace, I'll probably opt for the bolt in for now, just need to source it, I saw quite a few on ebay , some had the bushing on the far end others did not, need to take a closer look at that. |
