Al right its been like 40 yrs and I can't remember on a 1964 ford 4000 gas 4 spd if I have to split tractor to replace rear main seal on the engine or not I think I do. The only time it leaks is under heavey load (6 ft bush hog) 90 % of the time its a "shop queen" and parade tractor runs great plenty of power I don't believe its ever been overhauled bought it with 3200 hrs on it(proof meter not working) good comp 100-105 on all cyl.50 psi. Oil Presure working temp. 1500 RPM 25 psi at idle working temp. thanks Rick S. |

| You don't need to split the tractor. You can drop the pan and loosen the main bearings a bit to drop the crank down a little and install the two piece seal that way. I did that job twice now and you do need pretty strong fingers to slip the the seals in. So far they are both holding oil after a couple of years. I'd almost rather have to split a tractor so I could use a normal 1 pc round rear seal though. Maybe that's just me. That's a good looking machine you have there. I think of all the options on that Prior series the power steering is the most valuable. Thanks for the photo. |

| You sure that is a 4000??? Looks like an 801 to me. Seen many an 801 series pawned off to the unknowing as a 4000. Look under the battery area in the spot above the 2 holes for the model and serial number. |

| From what I've read and been told they were "evolving" around 1964 to the thousand series we are familiar with. |
