My dad left me the 3000/3600 (I don't know what it is. The hood is off and the only way I can tell them apart is from the decal!) to finish up the backyard, and to replace the radiator I destroyed, if you remember.

anyway, I was pushing some dirt around and it decided to keep driving when I tried disengaging the clutch. The PTO will still disengage, but the drive won't. I looked at the linkage and it's adjusted as short as possible.

Thought I'd check here with you guys as well as giving my dad a call.

I'll give you a shout tomorrow, maybe we can get a conference call with my dad.

Yeah, but on the carrier I always had someone telling what to do. You'll be the chief tomorrow!

Hey Jerry,

Thanks for the info. I think I'll tackle it here, I have everything I need to do it, not necessarily to do it easy though!

One question I have is on the hydraulic pump, can it be removed from its mounting without removing the lines from the pump? Or if I have to remove it, how is the big upper (return I imagine) line held in place? It looks like it has some silicon around it, but doesn't appear to move that easily when I tried pulling it out.

One other thing, the power steering lines from the pump to the steering gear, is it better to break them at the pump or at the gear? And as well, the rams, break them at the steering arms, or where they come out of the grear?

Did you loosen the rear lines on the cooler? They look like they're just stretched right out!

Once I'll get it apart, I'll post some pictures of what happened. Hopefully something easy.

Thanks again!

Eric

Hey Jerry,

No noise or anything different that I noticed. I had just stopped it put it reverse and backed up about 20 ft, at not much more than an idle. The blade bumped a tree and the wheels started digging. I had the clutch pushed in and bumped it into neutral to stop. I popped it into 1st and drove back up to the garage.

I checked the linkage and nothing has visibly changed, i tried adjusting it as short as I could get it and still nothing. Still feels as smooth as it always did. I checked the PTO and that clutch is disengaging fine.

Got any pics you can post on splitting and blocking it? :(

Thanks Jerry and all the others for your input!

You thinking about splitting it there?
It really isn't a bad job. That tractor is not at all grimey either. You need a floor jack and some cribbing. And a 1 1/8" inch box end or socket wrench to get the two top bolts.
Since I took this photo I've learned to wedge the front axle and crib the front end under the pan. Then use the floor jack to roll the rear half away. Easier to mate it back up that way.
Take some good photos if you do it. Especially what the problem is.
But don't feel like you have to do the job. This is easy for us here.
Photo is actually a 3600. Kind of a PIA to do because of the oil cooler lines on the right side VS a 3000 that didn't have them but not the end of the world. Again, those tranny, rear engine seals are all new -

Ahhhhh "While using it" !

That's bad. I'm guessing a spring may have broken in the hub. Ultradog said it's new -- so that would be a rare occurrence, but you never know. Even new things break occasionally. Hopefully, it's just some bit of something wedged in there and not anything truly expensive.

Howdy Eric,
That's kinda odd. Did it make any kind of noise when it went? What does the pedal feel like? Any change in the amount of pressure required to push it in?
Fellows this is that 3600 school tractor Kenny bought last year and built a running tractor out of. We had it split when we were building it and did put new seals in it. The clutch, PP and everything in there is Brand New Ford equipment.
Dunno Eric, as said below, only a split will tell the story. It's not like we can't split one here but kinda sad to bark up the new paint by wrenching on it.

Was the clutch disc a LUK or something else?

Given the fact that you were using it when the problem occured... I would wager that the main disc has dumped it's center hub. Time to split her open. You can either just change the disc... or preferably change the disc and pressure plate assembly that will come with the PTO disc. You'll open a good hole in a grand before you're done. It's also wise to change the engine rear seal (and retainter gasket if it's got a stepped stud block for some reason...) as well as changing the transmission input shaft seals and pilot/release bearings.

I agree with Rod. It didn't decide to stick or seize while in use. Split it and fix it.

Have not seen this in two stage clutches but at times the friction pad can fracture and a piece wedge in so that gap between the fly wheel and pressure plate is at max and can not open any more

Thanks for the info John, but this happened while I was using it. It's been working fine for the last couple months and worked fine about 12 (engaged/disengaged) cycles in and out before it quit.

I could understand if it did it right from the initial start up today. I was pushing some dirt and brush backwards when it happened. I can't imagine that had anything to do with it.

Thanks again,

Eric

Clutches that are rarely used can and all too often do rust to the flywheel. It sounds like you have a 2 stage clutch and only one side is frozen.

Search this web sight for "sticking clutch" and you will get a bunch of methods to try and free it. It probably will free up. I"d start by tying down the clutch peddle and doing some hard work like plowing. If you have a bottom plow or a chisel plow that is the way to go. In 2nd or 3rd (with the clutch tied down) quickly lower the 3pt and the drag will probably pop it free right away.

Then in high gear do 10-12 starts at 1500 rpm or so to burn off the nastiness that was causing it to stick. From now on, you will need to park it with the peddle held down as it will be prone to repeating.
