I've been adding power steering to my 660. I found a donor unit off a 641, cleaned it all up, bought new hoses, filter, belt and mounted everything on my 660. I just finished bleeding the air out and found a problem. The steering works fine turning one way, but is hard turning other. Almost harder than without power steering. Seems like it fighting me just a bit.

I disconnected the cylinders from the drag link, the right one acts as I would have expected, but the left one seems strange. As I turn just a little to the right, it extends completely. Any turn to the left and it retracts, but slowly.

I am thinking I have some valve problems. Before I pull the dash off again, I thought I ask here for some insight.

Thanks,

Update. I finally found some tractor working time and pulled the PS Valve off the steering gear. Here is what I found.

Tony, you were right on the mark - one broken spring. Parts are on order for delivery Thursday, That gives me 3 days to figure out how to put this back together. Every thing just fell out as I lifted.

Time to hit the books. At least everything looks nice and clean. That's a relief.

Thanks for all the help,

Kurt

Makes me nervous too Tony. That price is too low compared to the last time I looked. Messick's didn't indicate that the springs were aftermarket, so maybe CNH just outsourced them to the "land of almost right" I think I'll order them and see what shows up. They are showing 3-5 day shipment, so it sound like they will come from the CHN warehouse. The seals and o-ring are in stock.

Sounds like I have several days to tear this thing down.

The price surprised me. Last time I looked I think they were $44 each. Maybe I better order quick before they change their minds.

Thanks Tony - I just checked, Messick's price is $17.84 X 3. So that's better than Jerry's price.

I wonder why I got gouged so bad.
I just bought 3 of them and they were over $100.
At $18 each Tony might be right.
If you want to get rid of your old ones send them to me. I'll keep them as spares as I have no qualms about reusing them. The same springs and plungers fit both 4 cyl and 3 cyl tractors btw.

Hello Again Kurt , That sound awfully cheap , the last box I did for Mike they were around Jerry's price and still USA MADE , I figured they would have gone up a little by now . If you get them in and they are made in China I would be hard pressed to use them considering their track record . Thanks Tony

Tony - Are you talking about spring number 39 in Ultradog's diagram?

Hi Tony,

I'll order the springs too. I don't want to do this twice.

It was great to meet you a few weeks ago at Mike's. Hope the rims worked out well for you.

Thanks for info and diagram Ultradog. That really helps. I'll get the o-rings and seals on order. I'm hoping that's all I need. I've got way too much money in this tractor already.

As for the direction of movement, I'm a little foggy on the whole thing right now. You are correct that its a little hard to get your head around it. It seems to me the cylinders were moving correctly, But I'm going to check it again before I start pulling the dash and battery tray. At least I didn't put the hood back on yesterday

As with all used equipment, I expected some problems. The good news is no leaks. The pump seems good as do the cylinders. If all I have to do is clean up the valves, I'm happy.

Thanks

Hello Kurt , Make sure you order three of the little springs also , they are expensive but it will keep you from tearing it back apart when they break later which they always do . Thanks Tony

I disagree Tony. I have reused them several times and they are still going strong. At $34 each X3 I would not just replace them.

Hey Jerry , I forgot to add how many bearings # 31 that I have had to replace in my tractors alone at $200 plus a pair . The seals like you said are a common leak problem as are the sector shaft seals which I always replace too so I can use gear oil and not grease in them as they had when new . Also don't forget out here EVERYTHING is a loader tractor and don't usually get much mercy shown to them when the box is bad it get very expensive in a hurry . Thanks Tony

Hello Jerry , As many of these boxes as I have rebuilt and as many of the springs that have failed I replace them because it is cheap insurance from pulling it back apart . How many cycles do you think that spring has gone through in the last 50 yrs ? I just recommend it from experience and do it to all of my tractors but my tractors are not show tractors that sit in the garage . Thanks Tony

Don't force it! It will break the little springs in the hyd block.
You state: "As I turn just a little to the right, it extends completely. Any turn to the left and it retracts, but slowly.
"

Shouldn't it be moving just the opposite?
It can be a bit confusing till you get your head around it.
If you haven't replaced the seals in the column I would do so now before you put all the tin on.
That upper column seal is a frequent failure item so doing it now is prudent.
Replace seals #28 & 44 and 2 Orings #32. While you are in there go ahead and dissasemble the hydraulic block and clean it in lacquer thinner.
I use white litium grease to reassemble.
They do get full of crud and rust and it is not a hard job to do.
If you get into trouble getting the plungers back in holler.

looking.
