My neighbor has a 50 something Ford that belongs to his mother-in-law and they cannot find the key. She is losing her memory badly. Are the keys just a universal key or how does he go about getting a new one? Also where do you find the serial number on an older Ford? I know this info is vague at best but the tractor is 2hrs away and I am trying to help him out. Thanks for any and all help. Mike |

| The buyer jumped the switch and off it went. He said he really didn't care about a key. It is an 8n. The buyer is a neighbor who has helped out the mother in the past so it is going to a good home. Thanks to all for the suggestions and help! Mike |

| If that "50 something" happens to have a replacement 2 wire switch already, I think all the keys are the same. They sell them at TSC and they come in pairs. Try borrowing one from someone that has a 9N/2N/8N with a similar switch. |

| | You can probably get a new key from your local Ford New Holland dealer. I did that a few months back when I lost my key. Ichabod |

| | Just put a new universal type ignition switch in it. They're not a whole lot of money. A Basic toggle switch will also work... Rod |

| You would have to leave it on while running.
Taking it off will disconnect the power to the coil and let you shut the tractor down. |

| Dittos on making up a jumper wire with two aligator clips in advance. Then wire across the switch or from the battery straight to the coil. EZ All of them are gonna need the same things to start. That is; a fresh battery, fresh gas plus air and spark. Read the caps on the battery. If 3 caps it is 6V + ground otherwise it is 12V - ground. |

| Unplug the 2 wires remove the switch and take it where they make keys and they will make you some new ones to match the old switch RC |

| Hard to say since it could have any number of types of key switches on it. But that said it is a simple 2 wire switch so all a guy has to do is make a jumper to go across it and you get a start up if all is right. As for where to find numbers that is not as easy to answer depending on if it is a flat head engine or a valve in had. Flat head is is one of 3 models 9N/2N/8N. 8N has a 4 speed the other 2 3 speeds. After that then the clues are harder and many many more of them |

| Hey thanks for all the help. He is going to sell this for his mother-in-law so he wants to make sure it runs. This may be a really dumb question but when you jump the switch do you leave the jumper on or not after it starts? |

| If you jump the switch you have to leave it on if you want it to stay running because it is taking the place of the switch and doing the same thing it does |

| By the way on most of the 1953 and later to 1962 or so the model and serial number is below the battery box on a flat spot there. Model number is on top serial number under that |
