68 Ford 4000 SOS repair cost and tractor worth

The guy who owns my uncles old 68 4000 wants to sell it now. He did mention the hrydraulic lift is sluggish and the SOS while it works is very slow. He said this happened after he changed the filter and he is thinking a piece of dirt of gasket material got caught somewhere.

An idea on repair cost for this SOS?

Also what would this tractor be worth as is?
 
I can't help you with cost to fix the SOS. I bought my '68 4000 SOS diesel with a loader for $600. SOS was dead, top cover removed so full of water. I bought it not knowing if it ran, but it only took fuel and a battery to get it started when I got it home.

Which problem happened after changing the filter, the lift being sluggish or the S-O-S being slow? And which filter was being changed, and where does he think he got dirt or a piece of gasket into?

As to what it's worth as it sits, it depends on what area of the country you're in. Around here a S-O-S that runs, but with problems, would probably go for around $800.00 to $1200.00.
 
I just got thru a 6month nightmare on having a 68 3 cyl 4000 SOS repaired, should have done it myself. Arthur's tractors in Indiana Penn. done it for a mere $4400+ $600.00 shipping. It needed a B-carrier, a few clutch plates and small misc. After reinstalling it, it runs but the tranny sounds like a thrash machine. It can,t last long. I would get that issue resolved before buying the tractor. It may just need cleaning up, new fluid,band adjustment etc.
