Looking at a Ford 1954 jubilee for sale. I'm going check it out tomorrow. I want to do a compression check. Haven't done one in awhile. Can someone give be a breifing on the procedure.Tractor has the nose badge. Was this the annivesary tractor. They want 2000.00 for it. Jacob in Mo.

53-62 had nose badges in general.

SN will determine if it is the LESS RARE 53 yr model NAA dubbed a Jubilee, or the MORE RARE 54 YR model.

comp check, thread in adapter to plug hole.. all other plugs removed, throttle wide open, gas off, ignition off, run her over. observe compression on first pump, that tells ya alot, then go ahead and let it roll over a couple times to see if it builds higher.

best to do this on a warmed engine.

after the dry test, do a wet test, same deal except add a couple teaspoons of oil to each cyl before the test. atf or motor oil will be fine.

a low dry # that comes up alot on wet means worn rings... a low dray and wet # could mean valves and / or head gasket.

similar wet / dry # and above 90-100 and it's an average engine. 120+ and I'd say it's a good one.

more than 20 psi difference between cyls is not good, nor more than 10-15 between wet / dry..

Thks Soundguy. I'll let you know how it goes. Is that a Jubilee I see in the background of that picture of your 4600?

I saw a decent looking 1953 NAA Golden Jubilee sell at auction this past Saturday for $1500.

1953 Jubilee and the 1954 NAA are almost the same tractor but they are not the same. Ya it is simple things like the emblem and some other small stuff that make them differ. That said I have seen them go here in Missouri from around $1000 up to and over $4500. Also seen them sell for less but those did not run or had something wrong with them. If it where me and you want a tractor for a small farm I would look for one of the hundred or 01 series parts are easier to find for them and they have better options to boot

Hey Old, I'm up here around the Fulton area. I just like the looks of this machine, always have. I've got'a 8n, 4600, and a Farmall cub for work. I was thinking about just using this one for plowing our garden. Its a big one. Tractor is in good shape. Good metal and runs and sounds good. I'm going comp. check it tomorrow. What don't you like about this tractor. I would like to hear yours and anyone else's opinion. Jack

One of the weak areas on the Jubilee/NAA is the rear axles and they are known to brake if pushed hard. Sold one for a guy a few years back that had the axle brake and he had, had that happen not once but 3 times over the years he owned it. Also since each was only made one year parts are a tad bit hard to find for them. Now if you say looked for a 600/601 they are very close to the Jubilee but the weal points where taken care of and parts can be found for them much easier.
By the way I am down here at the south side of the Lake of the Ozarks Camdenton

I would look at the hyd. pump. If it has a round pump, it has been upgraded, a good thing. The square pump is on borrowed time and will cost an arm and leg to fix. I think 1953-54 had square pumps and you would have to replace the hyd lines if you want to up grade. Good luck finding the newer hyd lines.

Just something to consider. It seems there are a lot of posts on hyd pump issues.

I've got the 1954 NAA and am happy with the tractor. I did do some electrical upgrades to mine after I bought it, i.e. new v.r,new coil, new plugs, plug wires,solenoid,battery,etc.. But over all it was in good shape. I paid a little high at $2,500.00 for it back in 2009. Here's a couple of pictures of how it looks now.

How many dollars for the aux hyd valve on that nice looking NAA? I have a cover plate for it. If interested my email is open

Hey Soundguy, serial # on this tractor is NAA 3432. Don't mean to sound lazy but any idea what year it is? Thks JacobMo.

Wheel spinners are the first thing I put on a tractor. After spending hrs and hrs looking back at a grader box doing land scaping, It's pretty easy to see why. I even have one on my LX-279 water cooled JD lawn mower. With a hydro-stat trans it's the next best thing to a zero turn .

It was hand stamped. Location was left side of transmission case just below and to the left of the oil breather. Jacob59

hmm.. a few odd things.

1, that is an ait breather.. oil breather vent is on the crankcase.

also, the sn wasn't put on the trans till later on in the series, very early units had them at the front left side of the block.

I have heard of early models that had an engine repalced ( thus no sn ) and they sfered the sn to the tranny.

post some pics... that low of a sn should be on the engine.. not tranny..

Hey soundguy I ment below the filter. Anyways here is a picture of the location of the serial #. This isn't the tractor I'm looking at but the location is in the same place.

swame deal.. a sn that low would not be there.. it would be on the engine normally.. unless it ws transfered over whent he low sn engine was swapped.

see.. in the early models sn was on engine.. and late models on clutch housing. thus an early engine machine, if it's engine died later on and got a remanned engine from a late model.. you'd end up with a machine with no sn.

thus some mechanics xfered the sn off the low sn engine over to the trans.

that MAY be what you have.

Sooner or later a front wheel will catch on something and spin the steering wheel.Happens often when plowing.I was pulling a load of firewood thru a mud hole.Looked back to see if the trailer was not hitting bottom.Front wheel hit a sapling, steering wheel did a fast spin.I keep my thumbs on top of the steering wheel at all times.Mabey some one who has been hurt by a spinner will post and smarten you up.

(quoted from post at 11:27:55 12/13/11) The hydraulic valve came with the tractor. I replaced the hoses since the originals were worn.

I give up, what are the shielded black lines going to the rear wheels?
