Ford 3000 Alternator conversion

What is the best price going for this conversion. I have found this one at link_disallowed ,but still seems kinda expensive for some brakets and a chevy 1 one wire alternator. Thanks

I always do my own and it is easy to do by the way. A simple Delco 10si 3 wire which by the way is better then a 1 wire trouble maker. I use an alternator made to fit a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC cost around $45 plus $10 core at O'Reilly's and has a life time warranty to boot. Then the simple wiring of it and a $2.49 diode and most of the time the bracket you have will work just need a long bolt and put the alternator forward

If you have the generator that has the tack drive then yep that is in fact a problem and I do not know the way to fix that

Now you know why most put a $45 Delco 10si on the tractor from the local parts store and forget about the tach drive.

Tisco is the only people putting that kit together as far as I know. It retails for 300+$. This site has it for $313.81 Part No: 6X10300ALTH

I really hate suggesting to any one buying electrical parts over the internet because of the warrenty. You will pay a little more but your local Tisco dealer will have the same part and at least you have a flesh and blood body to talk to if you have warrenty issues.

you got 3 choices.

cheap an easy and no tach

expensive and a tach with alt with drive.

somewhat spendy and more work, aux tach drive and new dash ...

no free lunches..

Everyone is trying to get around that darned tach drive today. See my post below about 3600/4600 tach drive and Plowjocky's 4500 generator question about half a page down.
As I said to plowjocky, it all depends on whether your tach is good.
To spend $300 to convert cause you want the tach drive only to find the tach doesn't work would
surely chaff your hide.
I'm starting to think all in all it might be best to leave them original and fix the system you have.
$300 would buy you a rebuilt generator, new tach cluster and a voltage regulator.
Then again, for under $300 if you have the new style engine block you could revamp it to the newer drive and cluster and put on any alternator you want.
That's kind of the route I'm thinking of going to because I have a good 3600 guage cluster and the later block.

yep.. depends on what 'good' remaining' equipment you have to work with.

them cluster's ain't cheap!

The other option is to find the Wilson number that someone has posted in the past for the Delco 10DN alt with a tach drive. That setup will require a solid state regulator but... it should be somewhat cheaper. I just can't remember the part number or who posted it....
As far as fixing or buying a new gen... I'd sooner take 2 $100 bills from my wallet, kiss them goodbye and throw them in the furnace. At least then I'd get some heat from them which is more use than I'd get from spending it on a Lucas generator.

I hear you.
The point is it's gonna cost you your 2 wasted Hundreds plus at least one more to get any decent volts And Rpms on one of these blasted Fords.
For that kind of money you can almost buy an Allis Chalmers.

The reason I want to change over is all the lights are really dim, the original lucas generator finally gave up and froze up the other day. I will have to look into the newer style dash tach, I know mine works but its showing tis age. I think mine is a 1968 model. Thanks

(quoted from post at 20:48:06 11/26/11) Well looks like I cannnot do the conversion, due to mine having a theaded plug.

Hey Jeffery: I have a older 3000 Diesel, the cable from the genny to the tach was broken when I bought the tractor, I have never missed it.
If (when) the generator ever goes out I will put a 3 wire delco onto it. My Wife's 47 2N has this setup and it works really, really well.
Listen well to "OLD" & "SOUNDGUY" they have been through this subject a lot of times.
Andrew.
