Ford 4500 wont go into reverse

I am looking for some advise on my 71 4500 that wont go into reverse. The shifter on the dash moves and seems to do alright, but in neutral and forward it goes forward and nothing in reverse. I is almost like Neutral is now in reverse...if that is possible. Also I am having a hard time shifting the gears.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks
Dan

Hello Dan,

It sounds like the linkage is needing adjustment or may be bent.

Forward = forward
Nuetral = forward (because the linkage hasn't moved enough)
Reverse = nuetral (becase the linkage has moved enough to get to nuetral, but not far enough to get to reverse.)

I'm not familar with these transmissions, but common sense would lead me to verify the linkage first. If you can find the shaft it is moving on the tranny, disconnect the linkage and shift it by hand to see if you can get it back to reverse.

I agree. It sounds like the linkage has slipped. I'm not familiar with the power reversing tranasmission, but here's a couple of diagrams from the parts book. The first one shows the dash mounted control lever and the linkage going down toward the transmission. The second picture shows the transmission case with the bottom end of the linkage. I believe that that parts 16/17/18 in the first picture connect to part number 27 in the second picture.

On my '68 4500 the shifter used to be sloppy as heck. The operating lever, where it goes into the transmission housing, is secured with a bolt that fits in a slot on the shaft that goes into the bell housing. The slot had worn badly. I took off the lever and cut a slot through it perpendicular to the bolt and in the middle of where the bolt passes through. Now when the bolt is tightened it clamps the lever tight on the shaft. The difference was day and night. Nice crisp shifting.
