Rebuilding Power Steering Control Valve on 841- NEED HELP!

The tractor: a 1960 841 with factory power steering. The problem: the pressure line from my pump to the steering column cracked around the inverted flare fitting on the column. This was the second time the inverted flare end broke right by the flare. I rebuilt the pump a couple years ago with new seals and re-assembled it, so I suspected an issue with the steering column/control valve. I took the column apart, and determined that I might be missing a spring. The unit has been apart before. I have the six little cylinders and three centering springs. I also have the two plungers and two check balls. There was no spring between these two plungers. Should there be? I can see the two plungers differ (left one has a tapered neck, the right one has a straight neck), but which one goes on top? on bottom? The shop manual doesn't go into this detail. The drawing may show that the curved neck plunger is on the top side. Also, should the check ball in the return port move? Help!! I should have been more careful when it came apart.
