doing a clutch in 4000, replacing the rear main while its apart, there was a cork gasket behind the adapter plate bolted on the rear of the engine. it looks like it has swelled, pushing the plate out and it was rubbing on the flywheel. is this gasket needed in there? i would think if it was not in there, the oil leaking would exit the bell housing faster when the rear main starts to leak again. any input would be great, thanks.

I believe that cork gasket is to prevent leakage from around the rear main cap. I've never seen one swell but you never know.
Were the 3 bolts that hold the block (adapter) plate in place when you removed it?
I went to the dealer once and asked for a new rear seal. He went to the back shelf and grabbed the seal and that cork gasket. So I asked him do I really need that gasket?
He looked at me like I had just gotten off the short bus and said if you want a dry clutch you do. I don't know...
Is your block plate bent that it is rubbing the flywheel? Maybe check for straightness before you put it back on.

yes, all bolts were in. flywheel runout is good. i'll put the gasket back in, i have a new plate ordered from Wengers in PA. for $16 i could not justify trying to straighten it out. i'm still not sure what bent the plate, but the gasket seems to be a must. thanks.
