Hello Again ! Well the clutch/ starter/ seals etc. fix went quite well took a whle but all operates correctly ! NOW I just backed tractor inthe garage to change oil in engine and power steering fluid just started coming out top of tube ! Please tell me it is a seal or O ring and not the expensive valve HELP Thanks to all ! Tom

Very common problem on these tractors.
It's a $12 seal in the top of the steering column.
You gotta remove the center hood and cowel to get at it. Steering wheel can be a pia.

You can buy it from this site. I have had good results ordering from this place. They also have the speedy sleeve here if you find the shaft rusted or worn.
If you live near a New Holland dealer they would probably have that seal in stock. I do like NH for their seals. They will also ship to you.
It is not a hard job to fix.

Hey Ultradog ! I just went out to shop, took off steering wheel, which was waayyyy too easy it literally took 30 seconds ! Is this seal about 2 in. long, rubber on outside, copper on inside with slots on outside ? I also topped off p.steering pump with some other fluid than what was in there what should I go back with ? Thanks Tom

I normally end up busting the steering wheel to get it off. Good that your's was easy. Grease or antiseaze spline when you put it back on.
You need to remove part # 34 so you can replace seal # 35. Cowell has to come off. Also throttle.

I think we had this conversation a month or so ago. A guy keeps learning all the time.
A gasser you hafta remove that strut behind the battery to get the cowel off. I pulled one since then and remembered. Diesel is much easier and you can spread the cowel with your hands.
I also was reminded this week that you'd have to deal with the muffler through the hood to get the cowel off. Another reason to go down with exhaust.
I wonder though if you loosened all the hood bolts and set a couple of 2x4 blocks on top of the battery if you couldn't remove the cowel on one end or even the nose of the tractor on the other end - without taking the muffler/center hood off. I Sawzalled the muffler off this old 4000 to get at it. But I knew I didn't have to put it back on.

I had that seal leak on my 4610 at 1700 hrs and i replaced the filter in my power steering pump and that fixed it. That was 200+ hours ago.

We just did that job on our 3000. Paid a bit more for the seal but not too bad of a job. One bit of advice is to replace the O-rings item #33 top and bottom of the block. We had to take ours apart a second time because the lower O-ring started leaking from being disturbed. They were very flat and needed to be replaced. It is cheap securety. Best of luck.
Joe.
