14.9x28 rear tractor tires on Ford 3000 Diesel?

I would like to run 14.9x28 rear tractor tires on my 3000 diesel, I wonder if they are a little too big? and I believe my stock wheels are 11" wide. I currently have 12.4x28 and they look way too small. thanks

They will work fine, my friend changed up from 13.6 to 14.9 on all three of his Ford 3000 tractors. He runs the tires loaded, it gives him more traction with the extra weight.
I also ran loaded 14.9 X 28 on my 35 Ferguson with no issues.

sounds good that is exactly what I wanted to hear. thanks for the replys. What would be smallest width that a 14.9-28 could be run on? I think I running a 10 or 11 inch wide wheel.

With bias ply tires, you can generally go one size wider or narrower than what is meant for a given rim width. (but going wider/narrower will also limit the maximum tire loads somewhat) I -think- an 11" rim would normally get a 13.6 tire. If that is right, a 14.9 should be OK on an 11" rim. I don't think I'd want to put a 14.9 on a 10" rim, but I kinda doubt that a 3000 would have a 10" rim.

You really need a minimum of 12" rims for 13.6 or 14.9 tires. Before I retired I was in the farm tire business for 40 years.

Contrary to popular belief, tire vs rim width is [u:a65d5079fb]not[/u:a65d5079fb] all that crucial! farm that I worked on had purchased new 8 or 10 4000SU/4600SU tractors over a 12 year span. They were all delivered new with 16.9x24 tires on [u:a65d5079fb]12"[/u:a65d5079fb] rims! they still have half of those tractors, and they're still working fine!

will be kinda tall.. but then I have a 950 with 14.9-28's on her.. so..... can't say much.. :)

Can't argue with you on the looks.
Dunno about pulling better though.
Putting power to the ground is some kind of a formula of tire size, weight and HP.
You Can get more traction using properly ballasted 14.9s. The question is: does your engine have the HP to effectively utilize it?

To get the full benefit (if their is any) you will need 12" rims at the least... I like what came on it original,,, I am not much of a fat tire man,,, It seams all the tractors I buy someone has put bigger tires on it ... I don't have a need for bigger tires but I am not going to talk you out of it , its your money.. What ever you decide you will be stuck with it... Some wheel slip is acceptable and desirable depending on what work you are doing with the tractor... In some cases that statement is reversed... Traction is what they made wheel weights for.

someone stuck fatty 16.9-24 turfs on my naa.. boy what a wide fat sucker that is... then dern things are spendy too!

glad i found a replacement set at the auction a while back to swap for mine that were balding..

imho.. the 14.9-28's on my 950 are a tad overkill.. I looked for a while for 12.4 or 13.6 cheap to stick on her.. found a cheap set of 11.2 and put on her a while while I broke down those PA rims and fixed them.. but in the end.. the 11.2 were just too small for the rowcrop.. so i finally swapped the 14.9's back on her..... save the 11.2 as spares for something else..

I've been reading these replies... I think what it boils down to is 1) what is the intended use? 2) what type of soil is it going to be working on? and 3) will it be weighted properly to make use of hte bigger tires? For my use and soil, 13.6's would probably be OK on a 3000; 12.4's were too skinny - just couldn't get enough power to the ground. I only ran the 14.9x28's a little, but liked them. 14.9x24's were too short.

The 68 3000 I have now has 14.9 x 24's on it, I bought it that way.
I would like to upgrade to 28" but not unless some are dropped in my lap.
It actually makes it easier to climb on!

you can do it, but it screws up the ground speed.. this can mess up using tillers and other slow equippment. Can loose a bit of power when pulling max out bottom busters as well. However I got a better//// no, fantastic price on the 14.9s so I had to live with the losses. In other uses it had very litte effect. But being short legged......

I agree I have a 3600 with 14.9x28 on 11 inch wheels, I think it looks fine, but I'm sure they should be on 12 inch.

11.2 tire is proper for a 10" rim
12.4 tire is proper for a 11" rim
13.6 tire is proper for a 12" rim
14.9 tire is proper for a 13" rim

it is recommended to go no more than one tire size wider or narrower than than the proper size....

All of this is very interesting and timely. I too am currently considering a 14.9x28 tire but factory wheels (Ford 3910) are 12" wide and came with 13.6x28 tires. So i thought i would buy new Ford 13" rims for the 14.9x28 tires. Low and behold they don't offer a 13" rim so i asked how did Ford supply so many tractors with 14.9x28 tires but don't offer the rims. The dealer told me (not sure if true) that Ford used the 12" rim for both the 13.6x28 and 14.9x28 tires. Can anyone confirm if this is in fact true? I must say i have looked at several Ford mid hp tractors and have yet to find a 13" rim on any of them. Thoughts????? :? :?

If you can, go with what is more common, when buying new tires, it helps with the price. 14.9 is a common front wheel assist size.
My 3000 Ford rims are 12" and the 14.9 X 24's work really well on that tractor.
