860 - 1st startup

I managed to get my 860 to the point of starting it up for the first time in 5 years. Still need to respray the front sheet metal since my last attempt had some catalyst issues, but otherwise I'm getting excited.

After the 3rd coil & stopping the fuel valve leak she started right up on 6v. Didn't take too much tweaking of the carb to get'er running smooth & idled down around 750.

I forgot I had left a loose bolt in the top hole of the lift aux plate, so I had a small oil gusher before snapping out of my blissful gawk at the newly running engine. After that, the only drip I have found is at the oil filter.

Only thing that concerns me a bit is the engine oil pressure is slow to come up. It comes on up to around 45# cold & hangs around 40 warmed up, but it sure takes it's sweet time when I first start up.

I re-used the old tube up to the guage & I noticed I'm getting a little trickle of oil on the cast iron beneath & behind the hydro pump, so maybe a little leak there at the fitting would cause a slow reading?

BTW, my re-routed fuel line is working very nicely now, no drips at the tank valve.

if the cap line leaks it may drain free and have to re bleed before you show pressure.. plus what oil ya running?

15w40 is a good choice. and take the plunge. all my machines and my dodge truck run walmart oil.. and walmart utf oil.

I think so too. I started running 15w40 in my 8N & the diesel MF165 also.

May have to try the "Tech" oil on the next go-round. I usually p/u UTF from TSC when they run the 6 gal. for 5 gal. price, but haven't compared that to Walmart's price.

In the 860 I went ahead & used 90w gear oil in the rear end & tranny, UTF in the hyds. I've read a few guys run UTF in all the sumps w/ good results.

Jeff

i generally run 80w90 in rear and tranny, and utf in the hyds. if a machine has final drives.. like a rowcrop, and / or a steering pedistal.. I use 85/140 for the final drives.

utf would be fine for all the drivetrain and hyds though.

I sometimes even use the supertech st8a filters if they are in stock.. otherwise a motorcraft fl1a or fram ph8a.. all about the same price.

tsc and walmart oil both come from warren.. and yes.. I buy whichever is best price per gallon. I don't mix.. but will top off with either. IE.. if I buy oil for a change, it's all of one brand or another.. et. not half and half.

my machines have run supertech or tsc oil for about 8ys.. napa/valvoline before that.. dodge has ran it for about 3-4 ys now.. oil change is cheap even at 3k intervals

No spin-on filter kit on the 860...yet. I still have the cartridge filter on it(which drips), plus a spare on the shelf.

Jeff

most of mine are spin on.. my 660 and 3000 are cartridge. 660 never leaks. 3000 fought me for 20m and i tried 2 gaskets before getting it to be dry..

odly enough the 850 spin on leaked on me when i got it.. a lil sand paper fixed it..

<--Wally employed. Last time scanned both oils, came from same "packager" as Rotella. Warren was last time checked the packager for Rotella in SE U.S. may be different in different parts of country. Is how WM does it. Anybody with a Telxon can confirm from Keep it stocked screens. Lists who is shipper with other info on main KISS screen. If same, 99% sure is exact same stuff, they don't like having to change the oil, just change bottle going in.

Favorite example was when worked for cat litter plant here in town. Oil-Dri is huge markup item. Came off same line with all 172 brands of cat litter. Different level of granule, OD is rough and other ground a tad more. EXACT SAME. Laughed my butt off at the retail price differences. Only one product had a little blue dye w/ scent added from all the other stuff(Fresh Step btw). Even all the the scoop-able was exact same, different labels. What scams.
