860 aftermarket manifold and elbow

I recently had to replace my manifold on a 55 860.
The new elbow 1 5/8 does not fit the hole in the manifold like it should. The bolt holes line up but the elbow has a lip that supposed to stick down in the manifold tight to give it strength I guess and smooth exhaust flow. This one has a 3/16 gap all around the lip. YT said there all like that unless you go to a elbow with a 2 inch outlet, it has a bigger base that fits the manifold perfect. I went ahead and put the 1 5/8 elbow on, thats the size of the muffler. Now I have to run a rich setting on my carb main jet to get the tractor to run. The rich setting is killing my plugs and Im getting a unburnt fuel smell from the breather. The idle mixture was not effected. Could this have anything to do with the new elbow? With the old manifold, as bad of shape it was in, the tractor ran perfectly.
Thank you for any help,
Todd

The aftermarket manifolds are designed to fit everything from the "53 NAA to the "64 4000. You culd put the larger elbow on it and then use the muffler for the 801/901 that fits the elbow. You will need to get a reducer to fit you tail pipe to the muffler or get the larger diameter tail pipe that fits the 801.
Are you sure you don"t have an intake leak between the manifold and the head or between the carb and the manifold?

I agree with awhtx. A lean mixture since installing the new manifold sounds like the intake side is not sealed. Could be the gasket, or maybe the new manifold is cracked. Did you retorque the bolts after running it up to operating temp? The exhaust elbow shouldn't have an effect on the fuel mixture.

I have installed many of these after market manifolds. They run much colder and you will have to richen the carb mixture! They make the engine run terrible! They are not the quality of the original. The holes are off and nothing macthes up. If this is a tractor you really like, find an original manifold in good shape and you will be much happier. I promise!!

I agree with awhtx.. I think you are confusing the issue. the exhaust side of that manifold has nothing to do with the setting on your carb mainjet. you could remove it altogether and run for a bit with no carb changes. sounds like an intake leak at a gasket or mating surface of the manifold to head.

Thanks guys for the replys. This Forum has helped me out allot over the years. I did re-torque and checked for leaks. I thought it might be sucking air too, but the low end setting was normal and I could get it to richin up or lean out like normal. My manual said for high end- 1 1/4 turns to start with. Mine ends up at 1 3/4. It wont start at 1 1/4 open. Before, I ended up leaning it out about 1/4 turn. The black powder on the plugs and the unburnt fuel smell is what bothers me the most. I can see having a slight power loss with the rich mixture.
I did a complete rebuilt on the engine and carb about 8 years ago. It has ran like new up until this new manifold. Its really weird.
Once again though, Thank you so much for your help with this and the many other problems this forum has helped me with.

Replace mine with a aftermarket,,, fired it up and it ran perfect,,, I did use a elbow off a 600 if that makes a difference... That b'n said I would clean the carb you may have stirred up some junk in it during the swap BTDT....

On a side note if you had a vacuum leak it would b extremely difficulty to make it run on the rich side.. We all know how good quality control is from across the pond is,,, if all fails I spec you will need to inspect the inner workings of the manifold for a restriction... It does happen BTDT... The end consumer is the quality control inspector,, BTDT 2 does not pay well....

I posted a pix of a tool I use to check float bowl level but can not find it,,, I took the drain out installed a barbed fit'n and ran a clear vinyl hose up the side of the carb to diagnosis a fuel issue I had,,, In my opinion its a must have tool to eliminate fuel issues.... Its a technique that to simple for most over qualified back yard Bob's with a good day job to get a handle on...
