851 to 861 conversion

Is there more involved in an 851 to 861 conversion other than changing to a two stage clutch in order to get the live pto? If so, what? Thanks.

I was looking in the parts book wondering the same thing. It appears to me that you also have to change the input shafts to the transmission in addition to the clutch.

There are about 20 parts that are different in the front of the transmission. I would guess that most of those parts are NLA from NH. It would be cheaper to buy a complete x6x transmission.

So, everything about the PTO engagement mechanism is the same as a single stage and all of the differences are within the transmission and clutch?

Pretty much so but by the time you got all the parts to do that job in the long run it would be better to sell you tractor and buy a 861 because doing it that way would probably save you almost as much $$ as it would cost to buy another one and then you could have 2 tractors to play with

OK. One last question then. How can you physically tell if the 5 speed transmission has the live PTO capabilities if the serial numbers are corroded away from the starter housing area on the trancsmission and the clutch is still attached to the fly wheel on the corresponding motor somewhere far away? Thanks.

YOu should be able to tell by looking at the input shaft. An x51 would have a solid shaft, while the x61 would have a hollow shaft, with a 2nd shaft for the PTO inside it. (or is the hollow shaft for the PTO, and the inner one for the transmission?)

Oh, OK I got it now. That's the reason for the 2 different input shaft slots on a 2 stage clutch. IT all makes sense now. Many thanks to all for your input.
