850: Where does governor spring attach?

Trying to correct a cobbed up tractor governor.

On a correct one, where does the fixed end of the governor spring (part # 9827) attach to the tractor?

In the 1959 parts catalog I have, (PA-8058),Fig 9D1 it sorta looks like it attaches to the air filter housing, but I can't quite tell.

It attaches to a tab on the underside of the battery box. A small piece of the floor of the box is punched out and bent down for the spring to attach to. On many boxes the floor and the tab have been eaten away by battery acid. If this is your situation you could take a machine screw about 1" long, drill a hole, put the screw through it with the long end of the screw pointing down and hook the spring on that.

Just to update this topic in case anyone else has a similar problem:

The spring in question is not actually a governor spring, but a throttle bellcrank assist spring. Its purpose is to help retain a throttle setting.

The spring seems to work as an overcenter type. It assists either side of the bellcrank center position and passes over the bellcrank pivot stud in operation. At that is what it loos like to me.

Because of this I think it needs to be located pretty accurately under the battery box if the box has rusted out and you replace it with a homemade box. Aftermarket replacement boxes already have the spring attachment tab.

On my 850, someone had wired the spring to the back right corner (facing forward in the seat of the tractor) of the battery box. They also installed the spring backwards (end for end). This caused the spring to rub over the bellcrank rods.

I turned the spring end for end so the longer straight end was over the bellcrank. It was put into the bellcrank hole from the top, not the bottom. This cleared the bellcrank pivots and rods.

The other end was located on a hook I made about an inch in toward the bellcrank from the right edge of the battery box, and centered on that side of the box (not at the aft corner, as it was before).

I still needed more friction to hold a throttle position, and this was done by tightening the castellated nut on the bellcrank pivot stud.

Now my throttle lever acts normally and holds any setting.

If anyone else has more accurate information, than the above please feel free to correct any of the above.
