860 vane pump losing prime

I recently bought an 860 with a Vickers vane pump. Got her home & hydraulics wouldn't work. Got lots of great advice here about how to prime the pump but was also cautioned that my problems probably weren't over. Guess what.

Pump will keep a prime for about two days shut down but then I have to re-prime. I understand that the common cause is a worn shaft seal. Am I better off rebuilding the pump, installing another vane unit or converting to a piston pump? If piston pump is the way to go what am I getting into in regards to the hydraulic lines -- currently I have a nice one-piece aluminum casting that I assume conceals the two lines.

Thanks,

check the easy stuff first.

it's worth the 13$ to get a lift cover kit that has the orings for the manifold to pump, and manifold to trans. repalce those orings to see if it is a suction side leak.

past that.. I think I'd go to a piston pump...

Pete, Your manifold has no lines in it. There are two passages cast inside it, and it is different from the Piston pump manifold. At first glance they look alike, but trust me, they are different and won't match up. BTW, How's the weather in my old home town?

Dave --

So how does one convert to a piston unit? Would be nice if the lower end of the cast piece would accept something standard & just use steel flare lines but I"m sure it"s not that easy.

Weather up here is quite normal; expecting first snow tonight but day highs are still in mid 40s. You know how living lakeside can be -- calm one minute, lake effect you-name-it the next. Everyone is talking about a hard winter coming but who knows.

Thanks,

The piston pump is a direct bolt on replacement. The only thing needed is the correct manifold.
Thanks for the weather update. I'm planning a trip up there in a few days, but will need to be out of there well before Thanksgiving. I've been in the South so long, I don't think I could handle driving on snow. Folks who are not from the lake area may misunderstand that last sentence. Thanksgiving 1956, 20 something inches of snow fell in just a few hours and locked up the Erie area for a week.
