860 Hydraulic Level Dipstick Question

Hey guys---my hydraulics work fine....however, the dipstick has markings that say something to the effect of "check with all cylinders open"...

Does the lift lever need to be all the way down to get an accurate reading? With the lever down, the fluid level is at the bottom end of the hash marks...

There is another gauge for the "pedestal" marked on the opposite side of the dipstick....is this for checking the level of fluid in the steering box?

Curious minds need to know...

Thanks,

Tim

The dipstick says "Check with all cylinders extended". If you are running a FEL off of the internal hydraulics you need to extend all of the cylinders which uses a lot of the fluid. Then you check the level.
The other side of the dipstick is for checking the fluid in the front pedestal on Row Crop tractors (700 & 900).

Thanks for the info.... is the dipstick in my tractor a "correct" one for the rowcrop tractors, or do you know if they just used "one model" for all the 100 Series..?

I hope the answer is the latter of my guesses...I would hate to have to take this tractor back to the seller because it is not all original..:>)

Thanks

Tim

I doubt that Ford had different dipsticks for the Utility and Row Crop tractors- the Pedestal marked stick will function correctly when used in a Utility tractor. Since the 600 & 800 were introduced before the 700 & 900 I assume there was a dipstick not marked Pedestal at one time. I bet one of those would bring big bucks on Fleabay from someone with a very early 1955 model Utility.

The hydraulic disptick on my 55 860 is identical to those on my 64 4000 and 58 961. All have pedestal markings on the opposite side.

my 660 has the one with the pedistal.. my 850 has one with no pedistal markings.

both are round rod that has been rolled flat.. one is flattened on both sides.. the pedistal marked one. the other is a half round flat on only one side.

does not look like the new all flat repops..

Another thought- maybe the NAA or even the 8N used the same dipstick as a Hundred series.
