860 Hub Cap

I have a 860 that has grease zerks in the center of the hub caps....I don't believe this was a factory installation....

What good would it do to fill that cap up with grease? The grease wouldn't really be necessary to lube the castle nut and cotter key would it?

Anyone else ever see zerks installed in the hub caps?

Well not really hub caps but yes common on boat trailers and yes they do in fact work well because yes they fill the bear cap and then also fill the bearing areas real well but if pushed to much will blow out the inner seal but as I said common and you can buy them for all sorts of trailers and they are a good idea for things that do not get used much

If the spindle is worn out to the point that the seal won't keep dirt out, then grease zerks are an easy way to protect the bearings. If the seals are good, then they'll just blow out when you pressurize them with a grease gun. (Those "Bearing Buddies" you see on boat trailers are spring-loaded to limit the amount of pressure on the seal.)

Some manufacturers installed grease zerks on front wheel bearing caps. The thinking probably being that the zerk makes greasing the hub easy and any grease is better than no grease.

My 2007 MF 533 has grease zerks on the front hubs.

Those on your 860 are not OEM Ford products.
