need your help/opinion. my new to me 2000 has no "thermostart" heating element in the air intake, to assist for starting in cold weather & no block heater either, I was told to just give it a shot of ether spray, well if I have to fine, but would rather install the thermostart system, unless theres something better than that, winter is coming, what are your recomendations? thanx guys, Dan

If it will be parked near an electrical supply, you can install a frost plug style block heater easier & cheaper than all the thermostart stuff, and so long as you plug it in, it will start more reliably.

I'd go withthe frost plug type block heater. Thermostart would be OK to have too. Ether only as a last resort. (and -VERY- small sprays)

Adding thermostart on one of these would be simple and inexpensive.
Your intake manifold is most likely drilled and tapped for the thermostart glow plug. I see the glow plugs for Ford tractors advertised on Ebay regularly though the one at the link is in England it gives you an idea of the price.
You would need to connect a tee in your fuel return line and about a 3/16" steel or copper tube from the Tee to the glow plug. All hardware store items. You will also need to install a heavy start button to supply electrical power to the glow plug or you could bite the bullet and install a new starter switch.
I'm guessing at worst case you'd have $75 in the whole rig.

hey guys I see the key switch is only 14.00 for the thermostart & the price on the thermostart that ultradog found was even cheaper yet, I think I will go that route & drop in a block heater just to be on the safe side, thanx guys Dan

Just found out that because I have the C.A.V. style pump that they also recomend a resevoir, what looked & sounded so simple with just a plug & switch just got harder, unless they still sell the resevoir?

If you have a place to plug it in, put the block heater in the core plug. It"s a better deal than the Thermostart. I have both and by far the block heater is better.

86590140 is the NH part number for a single element 600 watt frostplug heater. Should retail for under $35 in the US. I've probably got 5 in stock.

It's not just the 26/3600... neither my 4600 or 7600 (both factory equiped with thermostart) use the reservoir, and one has a rotarty pump the other an inline. I've only seen the reservoir on pre-'76 models.

That's what I figured. I think he could just make up the line and use it that way. Just means he's have a little less fuel to burn than with the reservoir.

Exactly. I'd still go with a block heater first, though. Give it an hour with the block heater and a good battery, and it will start in colder weather than you want to go out in.
