I bought a new distributor, and ofcourse I screwed up the timing. Is there a trick to this? I followed the service manual to a "T", and all I get is a backfire. It says to time it at 5 degrees, but I treid that and "zero", nothin. If I move one tooth either way, then the rotor is not pointing at number 1. Any help is appriciated. Rob

Remember the 4 stroke engine fires on every other revolution of the crankshaft so you will see the timing marks line up on rhe compression AND exhaust stroke. You"re probably timed on the exhaust stroke.

To find #1 on the compression stroke, remove the #1 spark plug, and with your thumb over the hole, have someone tap the starter until you feel pressure on your thumb. When you do, you are on the compreesion stroke.

Try this. Take the plug wires and cross them over the center coil wire and then try to start it. By crossing them that way you switch the firing order 180 and I'll bet you have it 180 out. As for which nipple is #1 it does not really matter which one of 4 it is as long as it fires when it should

Remove the plug from the #1 cylinder (closest to the radiator) and stick your finger in the hole. Rotate the engine by hand, when there is air pressure pushing your finger out, that's the compression stroke. Set the timing there. Rotate the distributor so the rotor is just firing. Route that wire to #1 and (if needed) rewire with the correct fire order.

If you need to have the rotor point to #1 on the cap, you will have to pick up and slightly rotate to get it there. To get the dist to drop down all the way the oil pump drive shaft has to get into the bottom of the dist. I like to press down on the cap pretty firmly and crank the engine. It will drop in 1-2 rotations.
