600 coil hook up?

I replaced the coil on my 600, and the old one said "batt." and "dist." on the respective terminals. The new more generic one only has + and - markings. How should this be hooked up to a 6v positive grd. tractor?
BTW what happens if it is backward, will the tractor still run?
Thanks.

What ever your ground is on the battery that is also the side of a coil that goes to the distributor. So if + ground the + side of the coil goes to the distributor. That holds true on ALL engines

Yep because the point ground to work so you need to have the coil wires as to what type of ground you have so if + ground + side of coil to the distributor and if the other way well I think you understand

 First of all, [b:7bc8aae0ea]"Old" is 100% correct[/b:7bc8aae0ea]. Whatever your ground is from the battery (+ or -), that is what the distributor to coil wire is. Makes no difference if 6 or 12 volt when talking about the correct wiring of coil. (Just be sure you use the correct coil (6V or 12V) based on what ignition system you are using!)

[b:7bc8aae0ea][u:7bc8aae0ea]Positive Grounded Battery[/u:7bc8aae0ea]:[/b:7bc8aae0ea]

- Wire from distributor to coil should be connected to the (+) Positive terminal on the coil.
- Wire from ignition switch (switched power) to coil should be attached to the (-) Negative terminal on the coil.

Positive Ground (+) <[i:7bc8aae0ea]battery[/i:7bc8aae0ea]> (-) thru starter solenoid / key switch --> to (-) on coil.

(+) on coil --> to distributor terminal.

[b:7bc8aae0ea][u:7bc8aae0ea]Negative Grounded Battery[/u:7bc8aae0ea]:[/b:7bc8aae0ea]

- Wire from distributor to coil should be attached to the (-) Negative terminal on the coil.
- Wire from ignition switch (switched power) to coil, should be attached to the (+) Positive terminal on the coil.

Negative Ground (-) <[i:7bc8aae0ea]battery[/i:7bc8aae0ea]> (+) thru starter solenoid / key switch --> to (+) on coil.

(-) on coil --> to distributor.

[i:7bc8aae0ea][u:7bc8aae0ea]JCD, To answer your last part of your question... [/u:7bc8aae0ea][/i:7bc8aae0ea][b:7bc8aae0ea]YES[/b:7bc8aae0ea], any battery-ignition coil fired engine will run either way you hook up the wires to the coil. [b:7bc8aae0ea]However,[/b:7bc8aae0ea] you may very likely encounter poor engine performance and outside electrical interference may also occur if your coil wires are hooked up backwards.
- Also note that if wiring at the coil is connected "backwards", then the spark will "jump" backwards across the spark plug gap (electrode area), leading to faster wear of the spark plugs and other potential problems, such as random misfires.

Isn't it funny how the easiest questions can sometimes be such a headache to find the answers to?

Now, I know I'm probably "beating a dead horse" by regurgetating this information that "Old" summarized very well, but I'm simply stating it so more people can really grasp the concept, as this topic seems to come up a lot. I know it took me quite a while to find out for 100% sure myself (not to mention, WHY). I sure love my 'ol Chilton's Automotive Manuals from the "old-school" days!
