860 clunk when in neutral

I notice that if I have my 860 in neutral with the clutch out and turn off the engine I get a clunk - clunk - clunk from the transmission.

No clunking if I have the clutch depressed and shut it off or when when in gear and driving it.

However, I do notice it when in neutral when using the post hole digger.

What do you think?

Thanks,

PJ

in neutral, and clutch not pressed, the tranny still has parts turning.. that's why the pto works in neutral.

with the clutch pressed.. tranny don't spin.

as to the source of the clunk clunk.

do you hear it when driving? if so.. does anything 'feel' different.. like a skip.. like maybee a broke tooth.. etc?

The noise is caused by the cluster gear sliding back and forth on its shaft and, to a lesser extent, gear backlash resulting from angular velocity variations in the mechanism as the engine stops.

Rebuild the transmission, hold the clutch down upon shutdown or ignore it.

Could be reverse idler. Bushing worn. Thats what the round cover with 6 nuts on side is.Take it of see how much play in gear.

Folks...He's got a "CLUNKER"...he should see if there is a "Cash for Clunkers" for old tractors LOLLOL!!

Good luck on tracking down your problem...seriously wish I had something more to offer.

Okay, well I don't have a problem with ignoring it, my concern was that if I didn't fix it, that eventually whatever was causing it would break causing some really - REALLY expensive repairs.

Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,

PJ

Well, I took the tractor in to have the problem checked out and it was in fact the reversing gear! So Shaun, you were correct.

Thank you,
