860 tractor bad 4th gear

I am looking at an 860 tractor with a 5 speed transmission live pto that has a bad 4th gear. He said he was driving it and took it out of gear without the clutch and it locked. He was able to take out the fill plug and move the gearing with a screwdriver and it worked in all gears except the 4th gear. If he puts it in 4th it locks up again. He has taken the cover off and the shifter forks are good. Does anyone know have bad this makes it? Does the tractor have to be split and are parts available? I would be willing to try to split it and fix it, but if this is such a nightmare and expensive, I will run before I get into it. Thanks Lyle

Could be a a lot of things. Since he snatched it out of gear without the clutch it might be something simple like a bent fork, or something serious requiring a split, like a broken gear tooth. In any case I wouldn't run it without first having a good look inside. New parts are rare and $$.

If you can buy it cheap I got good used parts for my 861 transmission from Alexander's Ford Tractor Parts in Texas.

sounds like it could be a good opportunity. I would plan on a split and yes parts will be expensive but like AWTX says they can be had. I was into the tranny of my 9000 this last spring and with a good shop manual I found it to be very straight forward, as opposed to a nightmare.
