Trying to figure out whether I have a problem with fuel or Coil. Starts great, Idles fine and can operate for about 10 or 15 minutes then starts hesitating and if you let off of the gas it will settle down but if you put it under a load as in using a box blade will start hesitating again. I have checked the fuel bowl and it had a small amount of brown powder and gas smelled rank so I drained the tank and carb then refueled the tank. It seamed to work fine but here we go again with the hesitating until it died. I can let it cool of for half hour crank it up and use it for again 10 or 15 minutes before it starts again

Sounds like you may have a rusty gas tank. This is very common. All of my old tractors have had this problem and each tank caused the same symptoms you are describing. You will likely have to remove the tank and have it cleaned or throughly clean it yourself. Then, to keep the rust from reforming, why not 'Red Kote' the tank with a plastic liner of some sort. This process with save you many headaches in the future.

Always check your spark first thing. Pull a plug wire and ground it to the block. You should have a bright bluish white spark that will jump at least 3/8".
Make up a jumper wire with alligator clips on both ends. Next time it sputters hook it from the battery to the + side of the coil. If the tractor fires right back up it is likely your key switch. They fail often.
Is your tractor still 6V + ground or has it been changed to 12V - ground? You will want to hook your alligator to the proper battery terminal.
Also, how long has it been since you went through the entire electrical system and cleaned all the terminals. Loose or corroded connections will heat up and fail to conduct electricity.
Remember the mantra - keep em clean bright and tight.
I use a 1/2" plumbers fitting brush. I keep one in the tool box on each of my tractors.

Good advice Ultra
I just put a complete tune-up and cleaned all connections. The ignition switch are brand new. By the way it is still 6volt positive ground.

I was afraid of the rust Harold. I need to Red Kote it and my 1970 IH CUB. Both need it. Thanks for the advise.

my 740 was doing that last week, and I immediatly thought lean fuel and started tweaking the carb.. helped some.. but I decided to check spark.. plugs were fouled.. new set and a readjustment of the carb cured the issue.

Hey Sarge,
Let me reiterate what I said in my first reply.
When it starts sputtering first thing to do is check your spark. If it is weak or yellowish then either hook up a jumper wire or check the voltage to the + side of the coil. The reason I say this is you have classic symptoms of low voltage to the coil. And as others here will testify, too often new parts (ie ignition switch) are NFG right out of the box. So don't assume, VERIFY that your spark is good. Then you can move on to the next likely cause which is a fuel issue.
