860 casting #'s

Thought I'd post pics of the various case casting numbers of the 860 while it's prepped for priming. I'm not that familiar w/ the casting codes on the hundred-series(other than part #'s), so I'd be interested to hear from anyone what "DIF" is, or the sideways & upside down digits are............

DIF = Dearborn Industrial Foundry
61F (upsidedown/inverted F) = 1956 January 31
62W = 1956 February 22
5BT = 1955 December 19

The number 4024 always refers to a rear end center section, 7006 is always a transmission housing, 501 is always a lift cover and 6015 is always an engine block. The prefixes and subfixes define exactly which tractor this particular casting fits.
The early Hundred series lift covers are just like yours with NCA 501 B all on the same line. The later ones have NCA 501 on the top line and the B underneath. Jim.UT, Soundguy and John in LA all have 1955 dated lift covers like yours but yours is the first one dated 1956 that I've seen.
The other numerals and letters, especially the ones that are tilted, obviously had some significance to Ford but I've never talked to anyone who knows what it is.
I do know the significance of the upside down letters (A B C D E & F) found in the date codes. The date code is distinguished by the fact that it is always on a plate that was attached to the mold with screws or pins and there is a colon :)) at the end of the code. Ford changed the date coding system a couple of times during the 1954-1964 time period.

Thanks again, Alan, for the info. I"m starting to get the code now...I assume they skip the code letter "I" & the upside down letter indicates the second time around the alphabet. Any significance to a letter being upside down & backwards?

Also, what about the little clock w/ "4" in the center on the rear end section?

Jeff

Yes, in the early date code system the first numeral is the year, the second letter or numeral is the month (1-0 is Jan thru Oct, A is Nov and B is Dec) and the last letter is the day (A-Z skipping I is 1-25, then upside down/backwards A-F is 26-31). The A has to be upside down because it is still an A when it's backwards, B C D E are backwards and F is backwards AND upside down (I don't know why but I've seen 3 of them and they're all that way).
That 4 in the middle of the "clock" should be a pointer and I haven't talked to anyone who knows what it means. It has been found on lots of castings.
I reckon we could answer a lot of questions if we could find someone who worked in the foundry back then but there aren't many of us who are interested in those little details.
