850 rear end noise

We have an 850 ser # 18586 that my grandad bought new from Eby Ford in Goshen Indiana. From the time it was new, it has had a whine in the rear end in 5th gear. Doesn't seem to hurt anything other than everyone in the neighborhood can hear you coming. We were farming about 80 acres at the time and this went on until about 1965 so in it's early life, it was used daily. Doesn't bother me much today as my 60 year old ears are bad, but just curious to the cause.

my 850 whines in high gear.. in fact.. most of my 5 speeds whine in high gears... I'd worry more when they stop whining..
