ford 6000 diesel

i am looking too buy a 6000 diesel and was wondering what kind if any problems this tractor may comendley have? are these good tractors? what kind of price should i buy one for?

If you are buying this tractor to use then,i would advise you to pass on it.These tractors had several weak points among them were weak crankshafts and hydraulic troubles. And the select-o-speed trans mission of course. Now if you want this tractor as a show piece or to restore then, go for it.Keep in mind some parts are very hard to find for those tractors now.

The 6000 was not one of Ford's "better ideas". The two I'm acquainted with both have oil leaks in the 3 point housing. This is a bear to fix.

I'm not so afraid of the SOS transmission as some are. It got a bad wrap at get go because it was not refined enough for production. It didn't take long for it to get refined and it was good from there on out.

If you keep looking and run across a Ford 6600 keep in mind the 6600 has nothing to do with the 6000. Unlike the 5000 to 5600 and 7000 to 7600.

The 6600 was a good tractor from day one.

I agree with Old Ford Mechanic, don't buy it for a work tractor...

I grew up across the tracks from the Ford dealership, where, in later years, I was a Service Tech and later Parts Manager..... As an 8-9 year old kid, I seen these new 6000 SelectOspeed tractors all disassembled,... The Commander 6000 appeared for the 1963 model year...The Commander 6000 was a refined tractor, with "many" of the "bugs" worked out.....

Some of the older guys that were in the dealership back at that time explained to me that Ford offered the 6000 owners three options..

Option one was to rebuild their 6000 to Commander 6000 specifications.

Option two was to trade for a new Commander 6000

Option three was to receive a refund..

The SelectOspeed wasn't the only problem with the 6000.

I recall looking up a "bunch" of parts that were no longer available for that tractor as early as 1978

.
One customer came in with a hydroulic problem. The hydroulic pump is driven by a splined stub on the front of the crankshaft... I priced out a crankshaft and coupler,as his splines were shot,,well,, we fast agreed the tractor was not worth the cost of a new crankshaft.... I recommended a machine shop to consult about rebuilding the splines... If I recall, that tractor was scrapped...

If you want a working tractor, get yourself a Ford 5000 with a 8 speed...
