861 Diesel Wiring

I have spent hours looking through the archives for a wiring diagram for a 861 diesel with single pole alt. and glow plugs. All I find is 861 gas. Can anyone please help and post one if you have one. Thanks
 
Hi Dave;

John in La is on vacation and I don't know that he has a diagram specifically for the diesel except the stock diagram. Here is a copy of his 1 wire alternator 12 volt conversion for a gas engine and the diagram for the manifold heater. I think with some study of the diagrams you can figure out what you need. Hope this helps.

It won't matter what model tractor -- all the diesels in the x01 and early 4 cylinder 4000's are the same wiring wise.
 
I THINK that I may have a wiring diagram simular to what you need at home on my computer; but since I am 1100 miles from there I will just have to walk you threw it.

Take the wiring diagram Glen gave you below. Remove the dist; coil; and the wire going back to the terminal block. You now have the diesel wiring diagram because it is the same for all other wires.

To add glow plugs you need a second relay. Depending on the type you get (tractor or car relay) the wires go like this.......

Run a wire big enough to handle the glow plugs from the battery post on the first relay to the second relay to give it power. You could also just run this wire from the battery + post.

Hook the glow plugs to where the starter would hook on the second relay.

Run switched power to the small "S" post on the relay. This wire can be 12 or 14 gauge because it only activates the relay.

If you used a tractor relay you will need to hook the small I post to ground. If you used a car relay the case of the relay will supply the ground.

That's it your ready to go.
Flipping the glow plug switch will supply power to the relay and cause it to ingage. This will allow power to come in from the battery at one large post and out the other large post to the glow plugs.

This tractor had a genarator when I bought it A mechanic freind who worked on tractors his whole life took it apart and did a complete engine rebuild but died of cancer before we could put it back together that was a year ago and I'am just gettig back to finish it. I have a hard time putting something I took apart back together.One thing I 'am not sure of is the terminal block on the steering colum has two terminals is one pos. and one neg? John could you post your diagram when you get home? Thanks for the help from all of you this is the best place to go when I get in over my head .

While I did not think of it at the time I drew the diagram below; I should have labled the terminal block on it. Many look at the diagram and never notice the terminal block is on there.

The terminal block is the diamond shaped box.
Both sides are positive.
One side has power all the time and things like the lights; battery power; and one side of the key switch hook here.
The other side is "keyed" power. The other side of the key; coil if you had one; starting curcuit; fuel gauge; and any thing else you would like to only have power when the key is on is hooked here.

Since I do not have the link with me you may ask Glen to link the 3 wire alternator diagram w/the dash warning light for you. It is a better way of hooking up the alternator and is realy the way the alternator was designed to work.

I will look for the diesel diagram when I get home and have had time to thaw out.
25° with a 40 mph wind yesterday and it was 65° back home. Sure hope my grandkids appreciate this visit.
 
Its 21 and 3 more inchs of snow this morning here in eastern Oregon. This tractor has the red dash light for the gen.so it can be wired to the alternator? I don't get the difference between 1 wire alternator and 3 wire is it the same one poll alternator just wired different? Glen if you could post what john is talking about that would be great Thanks again David
