Ford 4000 cooling system issue

My neighbor has a 4 cylinder 4000 gas, looks like an 861, and his cooling system is extremely dirty. Is the plate on the side of the block for the lifters or is this a clean-out like an International? We flushed his radiator 4 times with water and radiator flush, and it's still dirty.

i like to knock out the side frost plugs and removing the draincock and using a pressure washer to get the block cleaned usually alot of crud just laying in there, you can flush it repeatedly and still not get it all, that is why I choose the quicker Pressure washer method. then replace the frost plugs and drain and then run a batch of flush through it.

I agree with Forddoc - you have to open up the block and use a pressure washer to get it really cleaned out. I've gotten lots of crud from them including large chunks of gasket, strings of RTV along with hand fulls of casting sand.

It's quicker to clean it by taking out a back frost plug and a front plug then blast back to front and front to back. The stop cock drain is fairly small and any big stuff will clog it up.

Don't forget that the water pump impeller can and does wear. A worn one won't push near as much water as a new one. And the thermostat can fail closed or fail to open fully.
