860 Left Brake Friction

Was adjusting the brakes per the manual. Noticed that the left wheel catches (a little extra friction) at one spot. This rough spot is very repeatable and at the same location. I assume the drum is uneven and the shoes are rubbing. Will the shoes fix the spot or will the drum "fix" the shoes? Best course of action?

The condition is most likely caused by an out-of-round drum. It will not go away by itself.

as dean said.. the oud of round drum will wear much more slowly than the brake shoe lining.. eventually it will wear the shoe and not catch.. but the drum will still be out of round.. etc.

Bummer. If I understand things then I need a new drum and brakes. Sounds like the aftermarket drums are cast and may crack. Is FNH the way to go?

Eric:

Speaking from experience, I would live with it.

You are correct about the aftermarket drums. They are cast iron and are prone to cracking.

Used drums may be no better than the one(s) that you now have.

Turning your drum(s) MAY help the condition but WILL introduce a new and more problematical failure to hold condition unless you can find someone to cam grind your shoes to fit the turned drums. This is very unlikely as this is no longer legal to do on passenger car drums (thanks, feds) and most (all?) shops have disposed of their shoe arching tool(s).

Three of 5 of my vintage Fords exhibit out-of-round symptoms to some degree but experience has taught me to live with it.
