ford 4000 rear main seal leak

Hi to all,
I have a ford 4000 select-o-speed ( 3 Cyl).
He is badly leaking oil when the engine is hot. I suppose it is the rear main seal.
Any idea how I can replace the part without splitting the tractor? ( It is an industrial version with a very big loader. That's going to be quite difficult to remove it)

I'm afraid a split is the only way... The rear seal is a one piece job that requires removal of the flywheel to replace. I'd also look at the input shaft seals on the transmission and probably change them as well while you're in there... and mabey the wedge seals on the rear main cap. I doubt they're leaking... but if a split is a major job for you, then you may want to do some preventative maintenance on as many items as possible while you're in there.

The model number 45011F is a 4500 (4000 series Industrial chassis) with a diesel engine, no PTO and a 4/4 power reversing transmission, not a select-o-speed. The F at the end of the model number is the transmission designation. Perhaps the model number is dirty or worn and it is really an E, which would make it a S-O-S, or perhaps the transmission was replaced at some point.

Either way, if it is the main seal, then I'm pretty sure it's going to need to be split to fix the leak.

For what it's worth, I split my 4000 SOS in about an hour yesterday morning. I spent no more than an hour a couple of weeks ago removing the industrial loader from the tractor too. But, I agree with Rod, there is no way to replace rear main seal without splitting it.

Thanks very much to you guys.

I'll try to do the job.

Any idea where I can find the parts number to order them?

Fred

By the way you are right, it is not an sos but a power reversing transmission.
