860 Not charging

My 860 6 volt system is not charging, From the testing I've done, I suspect the generator is at fault. With the following information do you agree? Or are there any other methods of testing before I remove the generator.?
Charging system is factory 6V configuration.

First I flashed the generator (Bat to Field). The voltage at battery when engine is running is still only 6.2 volts. Ammeter indicates no current (zero) when charging, but negative charge when I turn lights on.

With jumper wire between Armature and Field of the generator, engine running, still no charge at ammeter or battery voltage. Does this prove my problem is gen. and not the voltage regulator. I"m not sure on how to test the voltage reg.

Last time the generator was rebuilt was about 10 years ago.

Is it time to pull the generator off and rebuild or inspect? Thanks in advance! The archives have been a great help.

Connect the field to ground (chassis), not battery (Arm). If the generator does not charge, it has failed. If it does, the problem is polarization, VR or wiring.

I disagree. Jumping field to armature is the proper generator isolation test. If the wiring is good and it doesn't charge with this test, the generator is bad.

Today I pulled the generator from the tractor. Before taking it to a local repair shop, I took end cap off the generator to inspect. Sure enough... one brush was stuck. Since it was in good shape I loosened up the mounting screw and the brush moved freely. Put everything back together and reinstalled generator on the tractor. I just tested it and the system is charging.

With engine running, output voltage at battery was still only 6.5v, but ammeter indicated a charge. Jumper'd Field to Armature and had 20+ amps on ammeter.

Thanks for the help. Hope this helps others as well.
