Ford heavy duty Industrial 1801, 4000

I recently purchased either a 1801 or 4000 heavy duty indusrial 4 cyl diesel loader /backhoe. I can't find any serial numbers on Transmission, (Selectospeed. Does any body know how to tell what I actually have? Engine casting no. is B9, trans casting no. C3, rear case is CO. Whole tractor is painted yellow. I believe back side of grill center was originally red. It has heavy cast front axle with cable steering. Heavy cast iron front hood. Any help would be appreciated.

None of those numbers mean anything to me, except maybe the C3. Are all the numbers on top the bell behind the starter eroded away? They would be numbers that are hand stamped into the casting and may only be buried by paint or dirt.

If the selector has red hash marks on speeds 5,6 and 9 you likely have the earlier 1801. If it does not it is likely the 4140. The 4140 would also have been produced with a C*NN-7006-B transmission, whereas the 1801 would likely have a 312259 transmission. The * could be a 0 or a 3. These are raised numbers cast on the left side of the transmission case slightly behined and above the inching pedal.

Does your trans have over running gears or direct drive. IT should be a 1801 with that cable steering, If the trans was swapped out for newer one with direct drive they might have ground the olr serial number with the trans off.

the 1801---4000----1958 to early 1960 were the only HD's that had the cable steer---could ge a factory change out on the SOS--serial numbers restamped on right side of the bell housing

I will try to find restamped serial numbers.
Guy I purchased from said it had 4000 HEAVY DUTY INDUSTRIAL SELECTOSPEED DECALS ON HOOD before he painted it. Did they make a 4000 in 1958-60?

don't think 4000 came out until '63. Know the ag versions didn't. On the other hand, 2000 industrials came about before 2000 ag models, so not sure of this.

The 4 cylinder 172 cu in version were built.....

The 1801 was made from late 1957 to late 1960. I think these were red and gray.
The 4040 was made from late 1960 to Aug 1962. These were red and buff tractors.
The 4140 was made from Aug 1962 to Sept 1965. These were blue and buff tractors.

The SOS did not come out till late Jan or early Feb of 1959 so that narrows it down a little.

If Johnbud would see this post he could tell you when they changed over from cable steering.

Look on the top of the radiator or the left front of the engine just above the oil pan for the date code and we could narrow down the year.

Larry Loy has the correct answer on the cable steer. Also, many were switched over to the new style in the early years as the cable failed.

Hello Dan , John in La. is the closest to being correct. The 1801 Series of Heavy Duty Industrials came out in August of 1958 to Dec of 1960 all were Red and Gray and all had Cable Steering . The Select-O-Speed came out in Jan. of 1959 . The 4040 Heavy Duty Industrials were Dec. of 1960 to July of 1962 and were Red and Buff ( a Pale Yellow color ) and were all Cable Steering also . The Codes you have listed are incomplete . IF the engine is a B9NN6015B it would be a 1960 engine, IF the Transmission is a C3NN7006B that is a newer Warranty trans.( Hence no serial number stampings, which is typical unless it is a Diesel ) and is the better Direct Clutch Version . IF the rear axle center housing is a CONN4024F it is a newer replacment or a used rear axle ( which is a common breakage part especially if the tractor does not have a three point hitch on it ) , unless it is a newer tractor and eveything else is incorrect . Now you need to get the rest of the numbers off the tractor and post them here . Thanks Tony JACOBS

Hello Matthew , Yes if it has a serial number on the Right Hand Side it is Factory Rebuilt Transmission done under the first major recall , But it is the serial number assigned to the Transmission ONLY so that Ford could track the Transmission after it was installed in a tractor in case of more warranty work . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Hello Larry , 2000 and 4000 LIGHT DUTY INDUSTRIALS which looked like the AG Tractors came out in Dec. of 1960 and were Red and Buff and were built until July of 1962 when the Blue and Buff LIGHT DUTY INDUSTRIALS came out ( Aug. of 1962 ) and were in production until Sept. of 1965 . The Red and Gray AG Tractors did not change from the 01 series until The Blue and Gray AG Tractors came out in Aug. of 1962 and were called 2000 / 4000 and were built until Sept. of 1965 also . I forgot to mention in the post above that the Front Plastic Emblem with the Word Industrial and the Gear on it came out for 1961 Production which holds true for both Heavy Duty and Light Duty Industrials ALL PREVIOUS TRACTORS used the Wheat Stalk Emblem, ALL 1801'S and 1960 4040's and 1960 2030's and 4030's . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Do you have any idea where serial numbers would have been restamped on right side? Transmission is casting number C3NN7006-B. Looked but could not find restamped numbers.
Thanks,

Hi, It is a diesel. You are correct on all casting numbers. More info please concerning diesel model.
Thanks,

Tony, I found numbers on radiator- Long,C5NN AA B9, Injector pump- CONN 9A543-D, Timing cover-EAF 6059-D, Front Axle- HTM 312539 B
Could not see any on front of block by pan.
Any more info would be greatly appeciated.
Thanks, Dan

My 1801 Industrial was red and buff originally. Sometime around 1960, the SOS was removed and a 631 4-speed was installed, and a CONN 4024 rear diff (1960) was added. My 172 deisel is from the '58-59 vintage.
