Need help deciphering 4000 engine block

How can you determine the lineage of a 192 gas engine that would fit in a '68 4000 tractor? Is there date codes on the block or a certain part number? is the serial number of the tractor also on the engine block?

Is there block characteristics for a '68 era engine that are not on later blocks??

The dealer who converted my uncles tractor from gas to diesel back in the 80's said he may possibly still have the original gas engine in his storage warehouse.

I'm trying to purchase my uncles tractor from the current owner and would like to put the original gas engine in it if he decides to sell.

Thanks for your help

Dave:

If the engine in question is a 192 CI three cylinder it will fit in your 68 4000.

The 192 CI gasoline engine was not used after late in the 68 model year, having been replaced with the 201 CI engine.

The dealer has several 192's in his possession. I want to make sure I received my uncles actual engine.

The reason I'm asking if there are date codes on the block or a serial number I can match up with the tractor.

There are date codes and serial numbers, but unless you have a record of those of the original engine, there probably won't be a way to match them up for certain; excepting eliminating those date codes after your tractor's unit code.

your tractor should have a label with all the major build numbers on ot .Normally under the hood. this would have the orginal engine number on .
