3600 PTO jumps out

A buddy just bought a 3600 that he says the PTO is jumping out of gear. After a little archive search I read that it could be the PTO shaft bearings. Is that a good/common possibility or is there a more common problem that causes this?
I'm 8N so don't have a clue.

The problem - and fix is the same as an 8N. Renew the bearing and/or circlip on the back end of the pto shaft.
On these models make Sure the pto is Engaged before pulling the shaft. Otherwise the sliding coupler will fall down when you pull the shaft. Easy fix from the left hand inspection cover to set it back in place but avoidable if you engage the pto first.

Thanks UD. It looks like I may have gotten elected to fix this thing.
The messes I get myself into....

It could be the bearing as UD mentioned, especially if the shaft has more than 1/4" float in and out. If ti doesn't, expect a bad spline coupler. That's not unknown either...

Part #22 in the photo. Splined coupler = sliding coupler. Same part I mentioned will fall if pto is not engaged. As Rod says, check the end play on the pto shaft - in/out. I'd say anything over 1/16" would indicate a worn or missing circlip. Mine has almost zero end play.

I just talked to him & he's getting a little disheartened. He says now the trans jumps out of gear too (on the high side) so he's thinking he didn't get much of a deal.
I wonder if that might be fixed with some adjustment?
He's about ready to get rid of it but time will tell.

Which lever is jumping out of gear? High/Low or the gear?
Never had to go in to the tranny on any tractor I've owned. But would not hesitate if I needed to.
Tell him not to despair. They are known to be absolutely reliable machines. New and used parts are readily available though not so cheaply as your Ns.
I came to these 3 cyl tractors after messing with a few Ns. I found them to be entirely familiar and no where beyond my ken.
If it is you who is going to do the wrenching on this machine my best advice is not just to bone up on the FO 41 manual a little bit, but to remember the 10th Commandment...

The gear I think. It must stay ok in low range.
Yea, he should invest in the manual.
Wish I had a few extra bucks, I'd love to have a tractor like this & it may wind up being cheap!
