Ford 7710 Electrical Problems

Of the many problems on our 1985 Ford 7710 tractor, the current one I am working on is the elctrical system. The A/C, Wipers, and Radio will not work. I have replaced the three pronged relay under the dash that divides the voltage and yet I still get the dreaded red alternator warning light in the upper right hand corner. The fuses are good, and I just replaced the entire wiring harness that is on top of the cab. The harness is correct, because the dome light works. Has this happened to anybody else? Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter, or at least where I can pick up a wiring diagram? Way too hot to drive this tractor w/o A/C.

does the relay energize?? This relay sends power up to the top of the cab. the relay must click when the key is on. fuses are also a problem so check voltages on both sides of fuses... the contacts tend to corrode. the factory relay can be replaced with a 30 amp relay as it was a bit trouble some. the relay would loose its ground on the inside of the metal can where a wiper contact touches the side of the can for a ground.

I've never dealt with that but I don't think it would be too hard to check with a meter. See where the power goes and where it stops...

I think I'd look at the fuse panel and if you don't have power feeding INTO those circuits, then I'd work backwards to the load relay... I think that's where they get their supply.

Wiring diagrams for those things are not exactly complicated, but they do consume several pages in the service manual. The OEM manual is worth having if you're doing any amount of work on the tractor...

I also don't recall for certain if the alternator circuit is tied into the ignition load relay, but I'm pretty sure it's NOT... so if you have a charge light on, you have a wiring problem, regulator problem, battery temp sensor problem or alternator problem.
Depending on how much time you want to spend on that subject, or money on parts... you might just throw a Delco 10si on it. The bracket needs to be ground out some, the correct pulley scrounged or made and the regulator disconnected... but otherwise it's a simple alteration.
