860 Steering Box Rebuild

I started the disassembly on my 860"s gear box.I have it removed from the tractor, arms, steering wheel, and sector gears removed. The upper and lower bearings in the column are shot.

How do I get these bearings out.Do I press the steering shaft threw the column housing.I"m just asumming that both bearings are installed from the top.I understand I should not remove the ball nut.

I think after I get these swapped out I"ll be ok,are the metal bearings still available? The bushings the sector gears ride on looked and felt good, the seals need replaced all the way around.

Thanks for the help guys.

Parts are available, remove the 4 bolts and take the column off. The bottom bearing installs there in the bottom of the box and the top is on top. Please buy a book (IT manual)and do not loose all the balls. You will always use it. Great investment

box is super easy to repalce the thrust bearings.

since you hav eit off, you can also drive out the bottom race and install a new one and a welch plug.

as the other poster said.. pul teh 4 bolt snad remove box top and column.. top race is installed in the cast box cover you remove with the column.. top thrust bearing rides on the steering shaft above the worm gear. if the top race is bad.. snatch or weld it out and replace.... lift worm gear out and replace lower bearing which is retained on the bottom of the shaft.. repalce lower race if needed.. reassemble and use shims to adjust preload to no slack and only very slight preload. there is a busing / bearing inthe top of the column that centers the steering shaft up near the steering wheel.. if it is shot, drive it out with a long punch or piec eof rebar and replace.

might as well do sector bushings and seals... I might still fill with a nlgi 00# grease even after doing the seals.. etc.

DO get the service manual.. the R&R procedure to retime the fore and aft sector gear to the balnut is in there.. easy to do if you can count.
