It starts on a rag w/h gas on it but goes dead as soon as renoved makes a clanking sound while running on the gas.Is there anything wrong internally I was told injector pump was good.it was running made a loud pop and started knocking with a lot of black smoke.

Sounds like you blew out a rod or holed a piston. Drop the oil pan and inspect.

I pulled head and oil pan all looks like it's fairly new rebuid.Would it start if the cam shaft was broken?

If you mean run on all 4 cylinders, then NO.

Pull the injection pump (time it to 23 degrees BTDC first with the lines on the pump lined up). See if there is an issue with the drive gears on the pump to camshaft.
