3000 axle seals leaking

I cannot find my service manual and looking at parts.PDF is sketchy. Am I correct in assuming that if I:
Remove brake drums, shoes, and strip to back plate.
Remove (9) bolts from Axle retainer asembly.

Does the axle assemby slide out then?

If so, should I then carry the axle assemblies to Ford dealer to install new seals?

I have also read that fluid-soaked brake shoes can be cleaned and re-used? I am not trying to half-a** this tractor and will buy new shoes if required. I just cannot stand to operate something that isn't working properly.

Alan;

You should be able to pull the axle out once the bolts are removed from the retainer. I'm not sure if your axle uses a pressed on collar or a nut to hold the inner bearing. If it is a collar it must be broken to be removed. Once the collar or nut is removed you should be able to service or replace the bearings and seals with no problem. The collar must be pressed on. I have an 850 with the collar and cut it off carefully with a torch, cleaned everything and then had NH press the new collar on. Hope this helps.

You are correct. Remove the 9 bolts and the bearing retainer and axle will slip off the end of the housing (trumpet)
The 3000 has a big lock nut not a press on retainer. I did as you suggest and brought mine in to the dealer to replace the seals and repack the bearings. My brake shoes were oily also so I first heated them with a propane torch to get some of the oil to boil out then soaked them for a couple of days in a covered container of lacquer thinner.

If you have diff lock, there is a nut retaining the outer bearing. If no diff lock, then a shrink collar is used.
Customers often choose to remove the axle/hub assembly and bring them in for seal replacement, just as you are considering.

I stopped by the local New Holland dealer today for some parts. While there, I inquired about the dealer replacing the axle seals. Price as follows:
If the unit has nuts- $125 per side
If the unit has collars- $175 per side
These prices are labor only. Are those prices fair? I don't have a clue!
