I installed a 6-volt positive ground pertronix igniter on my 861. When I turn on the key I only have 4.5volts going to the ignitor. IF I uhook the ignitor then I have 6volts again. any thoughts?

With the key on, probe for voltage starting at the igniter and work back to the point whaer you get back to 6 volts. There is a weak component or bad connection somewhere.

This is probably what drove you to purchase electronic ignition to begin with. Now you get to find and fix the original problem anyways.

The voltage drop between the source (battery) and the distributor is caused by resistance somewhere in the circuit. This is most likely caused by poor connections and/or inadequately sized wireing.

I would start by checking the voltage drop across the ignition switch as vintage Ford ignition switches are a known source of problems.

I agree with the others.. disconnected you have open circuit battery voltage...

find the original problem.. a vom or test lamp will help here.

look at any connectors, splices, rusty connections, switches.. etc..

Sorry for taking so long to thank you for the posts, I finally got a chance to run a wire direct from the battery and it started. It must be in the switch or the wire to the distributor. thanks again. Jeff
